Even back then Al was set up to be a bit of a looser as a character which is why he/the show got away with jokes like these. These jokes were controversial even for their time! But even with that premise exaggerated even further this show would've had no chance today. Al Bundy was indeed an underdog hero.

Ed O'Neill, just as a piece of fun trivia, played football for Youngstown State, then spent the 1969 NFL season on the Steelers' practice squad. He also earned a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2006 or so after studying with one of the Gracies.
