syphilis infections can affect IQ, so it's hard to say that he's an idiot when he has an intelligence test years later showing it's below 100. 95 is within the range of average intelligence btw and it easily possible his basline IQ at a younger age was much higher.

Yep. They mention the swimming pool incident so I’m surprised that they assume that his baseline was 90 even though they tested him when syphilis had been eating away at his brain for years. Saying an IQ of 90 makes him a moron is pretty dumb, while an IQ of 90 means slightly below average, he is still well within the normal IQ range and would be perfectly normal. While I realize it’s meant to be a comedy and historical accuracy isn’t that strict, it sends a bad message when your entire skit is based off a false premise.
@Suzanne44154 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and it even sounded like the actual score was 95? In which case, that's def. not a big enough margin to call him anything except for "normal" or "average". Even today's iq-tests (that are better than they were) are not that sensitive that they can give really valid reliable information about someone's abilities within the 95-110 or so range. (When I studied this, our professor did say that kids tend to start predictably having trouble with certain school subjects somewhere in the 80-85 range.) But it's kinda funny how such a large proportion of us tend to assume on some level that we're in the above-average group - even if just by a little bit. I'll admit that I do it too, even though objectively there is evidence from my life pointing in both directions. But like, come on, I studied psychometrics at a university at one point, I'm clearly on the smart side no? Meanwhile I also JUST watched a joke video believing for a good two minutes that footage of a hippo's butt played backwards was footage of a giant anteater species. Filing that under "outliar fluke data, invalid due to sleep deprivation, let's never think about this again".

@Erasmus the blasphemous Agreed, most people forget he took the damn fucking test after having beeing in prison for about 10+ years and having had Syphillis since he was in his... ufff, mid or late twenties? So considering how late stage syphillis basicly turns your brain into mush one can only assume how smart he was in his young years. Also this video omits at the start how he HELPED building up the Gang as the head-honcho's right hand man and only taking over after the boss got cold feet after a few attempts on his life. It was not as easy as to 'just roll in' into Chicago, but it was a question of wheter to expand the buisness and come into conflict with other gangs, or to back down and be happy with his piece of cake. Ultimately it was a bold move and the first step that ultimately lead to the downfall of the whole thing. (as the exceeding gang violence lead to more innocents getting caught in the cross-fire and hence stoking public sentiment against Gangsters, especially after the Prohibition got lifted and alcohol started to flow legally again. )

@@HerveBoisde yeah... I'm aware 100 is average. I was making a joke saying even smart people are dumb. I also made up the 90% of ppl are morons "stat". It's probably closer to 100% of ppl are morons. And ur comment is kinda furthering my case

Most people cluster around 100 IQ and a small minority of people are literally morons or extreme geniuses.

Y’know I feel really weird that when I first watched this video I had NO idea who Tommy Blancha was and was embarrassed it find out years after the fact that he co-created Metalocalypse and the voice of Murderface, Toki, and Dr. Rockzo among others. Which then put the image in my head of Murderface and/or Toki doing an episode for the Metalocalypse universe’s version of the show that goes off the rails absurdly quickly

As someone who researched the mafia, Al Capone just coming to Chicago was incorrect, and his trial. He had it good until the judge switched the jury

"Literally became like a billionaire. The guy was like 90 IQ. pretty weird. he was the most powerful man." History repeats itself lol
Money... power.... people assume it takes a great deal of brains to attain these things. It doesn’t. It requires tenacity. And luck. Lots of luck. Single-mindedness definitely helps. A line from my favorite movie always comes to mind when thinking about so-called “great Americans”. Bernstein: “That man was the biggest darn fool I ever met.” Reporter: “He made an awful lot of money.” Bernstein: “It's no trick to make an awful lot of money... if all you want is to make a lot of money.”

Penicillin wasn't first used until 1942, 11 years after Capone was convicted. It wasn't really an option. The usual treatment for syphilis before that involved mercury, arsenic, and other things. All of them were of questionable efficacy and they all had tons of nasty side effects such as brain damage and infertility.
@candiceejones2 жыл бұрын
He actually did get treated with penicillin in 1942 (five years before he died) but his syphilis was too far advanced and the damage was done.

Capone, wasn't an idiot. He was the beneficiary of the times. Johnny Torrio steps down as the head of one of the most powerful gangs in Chicago. Tired from the ethnic wars between the Italian and Irish gangs and having survived a near assassination, he sets up what's now known as the "Chicago Outfit" which exists today. When Torrio steps down; Capone inherits the leadership as being his protege. Now keep in mind, most gangsters aren't that bright to begin with, which is why they get into crime in the first place. For the most part, to rise to the top, you have to be tougher and more cunning than everybody else. Which means a greater propensity to murder somebody. If not for the enactment of Prohibition (Read up on how it happened here: www.pbs.org/kenburns/prohibition/about/) organized crime may never have risen above the level of petty criminality, loansharking and protection racketeering. But with the high demand for alcohol, it injected a source of revenue that woudn't be seen again until the introduction of heroin and the cocaine business in Colombia and the rise of the cartels.

Capone wasn't as dumb as he was portrayed here. Little known fact, before All Capone was recruited by the Chicago mob, he was an accountant in Baltimore and trying to just be a legit family man. Johnny Torrio was asked by All to be his son's godfather, and it was at Sonny, Al's sons baptism that All was asked to come join them in Chicago.
