All that with dynamics. Al is still my favorite because he is a great musician not just a great Guitar player. Those lines speak with such authority. Simply the best.

Speed, cleaness, feeling, timing, accuracy; now I know why Petrucci cites him as his Sensei
@tinfoilhatter6 жыл бұрын
right? he not only can play everything, but he knows a hundred appropriate alternatives for every 'thing' musically... that's the impression i get...he's turned every note into a good note, without exception!
@jskypercussion2 жыл бұрын
The other thing that many forget about Al is he is also a percussionist on that guitar. Al's timing is way harder to play that Petrucci's straight foward drills. Now I am not knocking Petrucci in any way, that is the big difference between him and Al. Petrucci's solos and riffs are crazy, they are just straight foward and cut right through the music, Al's have all kinds of crazy tempo rudimentary structures that really get frustrating after a while if you want to play his licks properly. Plus the range of jazz that he uses makes his musicality much more advanced that Petrucci's. After a while Petrucci's stuff becomes pretty easily understandable once you master the scales he generally comes out of and his techniques. Now on the other hand with jazz, jazz mathematically is like the Pie equation. It never ends and the possibilities are unlimited. Some of the greatest jazz masters admitted they were still learning jazz in their later years. But that is why Petrucci worships guitarists like Al Di Meola, Steve Howe, Alan Holdsworth and Steve Morse. They all do things uniquely and distinctly with serious technicality and musicality.

What's always amazed me about Al is his impeccable timing. His triplets are always perfect, they start on time and always end on time regardless if they are arpeggios or three-note per string runs.
