I still LOVE disco after all these years and, yes, I am straight! This song was on one of the first record albums that I owned in 1977. It was called Disco Mania and it also featured Helplessly (Moment of Truth), What A Diffreence A Day Makes (Esther Phillips) and Love Rollercoaster (Ohio PLayers). That's the good stuff, oh yeah!!!!

I think the reason for the banjo sound inclusion was because Al Downing was best known as a country and Western Singer. So it seems he wanted some hint of that genre on this soul track. I have no idea why he crossed over but glad he did. For this is an awesome track.

The very beginning of Disco R&B was crossing over This was before everyone found out about it A beautiful diverse world in NYC clubs We created our own reality This brings it all back

+John Barrett - you know John, I thought it was me imagining things. I had to replay it a couple of times. I think it's a straight guitar at first then changes to banjo

Berry Gordy or Jeffrey Bowen or whoever produced Bonnie Pointer's later disco hits must have remembered the banjo. And thus record is so good that I, having hit the dance floor in 1982, can try to project back to a packed floor in 1974. I bet many a DJ dropped the sound so that the floor could scream "I'll keep holding ON!"

As Al Downing was a country and western singer. I guess the banjo was a reminder of his main musical genre.

It is most certainly disco, derek1241! Early disco, still flavored with soul/r&b, like the o'jays, harold melvin w/teddy pendergrass, etc... Early 70's, enjoy! Disco in its infancy. Peace.

It was the first 10 inch single. South Shore Commission's "Free Man" was the first 12 inch single
@markhabersham41535 ай бұрын
@@RK-um9tu I don't know if this was the first 10" record - a la Sunshine Sound acetate - which was only good for a limited amount of plays because an acetate deteriorates badly in sound quality every time you play it (unlike a normal vinyl record) and Sunshine had been around before the Al Downing record.....if you are talking about the first RETAIL 12" in the stores it was Ten Percent by Double Exposure on SALSOUL records , in the stores.....Free Man by the South Shore Commission was a SCEPTER records DJ Promo 12" never available commercially , rarely in the stores , very hard to get.....the 45 & the lp were for sale.....this Tom Moulton (?) offering of Al Downings "I'll Be Holding On" sounds WAY BETTER than the CHESS 45 which although it is a Disco Mix it is poorly & unevenly recorded.....if this Tom Moulton version was really indeed done by him what's with the skip in the sound and from 4:20 to the end there is total silence......odd.........
