rake will only gather the clippings etc, knives will cut into the thatch and soil.

Good question, but first you must dethatch lawn with hard blade, hard blade do pretty much all the work. Then you just gather the clippings with the other with tines. Thanks for comment, sorry for delay..

The cutting blades you use max 2times a year (if you are not proffesional lawn taker)

Why we use this?

Dead grass and dirt and weeds can form a thick layer of dead material between the roots of the grass and the top of hte lawn. That chokes the grass and keeps water and nutrients from getting to the roots. Tearing that crap up once a year and than maybe seeding some fresh grass on top gets you a great healthy lawn. But it should probably be done in the spring to let the grass have time to recover.
