What a fantastic MUSICIAN. Rest in peace MR KING. In my humble opinion the lynard skynard band was one of the absolute best during the 70s.

Ed King was vital to those first 3 albums. He had a knack for arranging songs and was always able to find a 3rd guitar part that enhanced every song .

Best is subjective. What Ed brought to Skynyrd was fresh blood with new ideas all coming from a more well rounded musician. Not taking anything from Allen or Gary they were both great players. Ed had the California influences which was a totaly different approach to music and several years of touring the world with the Strawberry Alarm Clock before joining Skynyrd. Ed knew that Ronnie was lyrical genius and had to find a way to be part of it. He and Steve Gaines were my favorite skynyrd guitarists by far.

@SIMPLE MAN ed, in my opinion, is a fantastic player. he could joined a funk band and played funk. He could have joined a jazz jam band and.done good. he couldhave joined Alabama and been good. He couldhave joined any band and start writing in that style. Steven Earl Gaines was that style. To his DNA. he didn't have to say, "ok let me right my parts in the style of a southern blues rock band".... Thats the BIGGESTdifference between Ed King and Steven Gaines.

I've always felt the same, he was such a huge part of the defining sound of Lynyrd Skynyrd. He wrote some of the most memorable songs they did. His very first day on guitar after Leon came back he wrote Sweet Home Alabama. They were never the same again without him, RIP Ed

Ed was actually a Les Paul guy but he knew that would muddy up the Skynyrd sound having three guitars with humbuckers (his email was actually "humbuck@....". ) Same approach worked well when Steve Gaines came onboard later also. Gotta have some bite and twang goin' on in Southern Rock.
