I sang with the U of Chicago Collegium Musicum under Howard Mayer Brown back in the 70s and have heard lots of early music groups. This is an outstanding performance - a real treat!

It's absolutely exquisite. I'm playing it for my Baroque class tomorrow before we listen to one of Rossi's instrumental pieces.

I was so moved by this presentation, that I've looked all over for a collection of Rossi's works. I finally found a three volume compilation through Cantor's Assembly - a marvelous collection for anyone who wants more of Rossi's work.

A-R Editions has a 2 volume set, with one volume containing extensive commentary.

How did Rossi match his music to the specific phrases so perfectly? How? - I want to know. "He's a genius" only begs this question. This rendition is particularly, and bang-on-right, pungent. The psalm's deep emotions are well-served.

Stanford Summer Chorus performs this lovely piece at Bing Concert Hall on Aug. 9th, 2019, with their approximately 50 tenors and basses. This recording is the one our Director, Rafael Ornes, has asked us to view before performing because it is so good. Thanks for posting!

It is from Europe--Italy precisely. The composer was a contemporary of Monteverdi.

English from the King James Bible: By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

@mpalardy As far as I know Rossi even played in Monteverdi's orchestra.

Need to find the dots to this; I'm a member of several male voice ensembles including De Profundis and it would be fun to teach them Hebrew :)

There are two editions of the whole collection: an old one that is probably out of print and a newer one ed. by Don Harran with a companion commentary volume. It's not really practical for performance and quite expensive. But if you can find it in a library you could just copy this piece. It's a lovely work. I just taught this collection this afternoon.

Rossi's sister, known as "La Europa," sang in Monteverdi's works at the Gonzagas' court in Mantua. The two composers were close friends. It's possible that Monteverdi attended Jewish services. The quickly repeated note called the "trillo," an ornament that is one of Monteverdi's signature motifs, has a remarkable likeness to the shofar call of the High Holy Days.
@jswack5 жыл бұрын
The trillo is explained in Caccini's Le Nuove Musiche and isn't unique to Monteverdi.

Rossi worked in Mantua, had published many Italian madrigals before this, and imitated the style of Italian Catholic polyphony around him (he worked also as a court musician at the Gonzaga court with Monteverdi, though not as a full member of the court ensemble and obviously not in church music.)
