The restaurant scene is the perfect example of acting, writing and directing working together. You don't need anything else. The funniest part of the scene though is they actually don't drink their coffee!!
@DeathBringer7697 жыл бұрын
I think that's really fitting they didn't drink the coffee. It shows how superficial the whole restaurant and coffee thing to are to their actual point/goal: to suss each other out and warn each other that they are dead serious. They were never there for the coffee to begin with, and the scene visually reinforces that by them not drinking the coffee ;)

Members of Hanna's unit include actors who played absolutely ICONIC roles in other films: Sgt. Drucker is played by Mykelti Williamson. Who is Mykelti Williamson? Oh, you know, he's BUBBA from Forrest Gump. Legendary character. Detective Casals is played by Wes Studi - the toughest Pawnee warrier in Dances with Wolves and Magua from Last of the Mohicans. Detective Bosko played by Ted Levine (Silence of the Lambs). Unforgettable characters. Yet when I watch Heat, I completely forget those associations. This is one of those films that is full of well-known actors, both male and female, but you just see these characters because the characters are so well written and played so well. Now THAT'S a trick.

I watched an interview with Jon Voight about his character in “Heat”. He purposefully played the character as a man who had lived a hard life in the world between legitimate and criminal. I remember thinking, damn, Jon Voight has really let himself go. He looks bad. The interview revealed his choice to play the character that way was on purpose. Heartily embraced by Michael Mann. Apparently, quite a few people in the movie business thought the same thing. “Geeze, Jon Voight has aged poorly.” We were all wrong. Now that is great acting, directing, makeup, cinema photography, etc. Amazing.

The scene is perfection. No shouting, no raised voices even. Just 2 opponents on both sides of the law. The 2 are really the same, but for the different sides of the law they reside in. The part I really love is when they both admit "I don't know how to do anything else. I don't much want to do anything else either", then watch the very thin smiles they exchange. Just perfection by 2 great actors. BTW this exchange is based on fact, the real cop told the story of running into the real Neil McCauley. He ran into him coming out of a dry cleaners and did approach him and invite him for a cup of coffee. Told him "Hey, I know you're planning another job, do it in another city, not mine'. And McCauley did say "Nah, I think I'll stay" and both later exchanged the fact that while they see each other as 'regular guys" when they next meet in the street, one is not walking away.

Damn, I wish every other director follow the example of Michael Mann in shooting scenes where two characters are talking to each other for it to be fluid and part of ONE FUCKING TAKE! It is so obvious to the observer when the camera flips over to another actor that the scene was another take and not the take previously shown from the perspective of the other actor. Whether they realize it or are too stupid to realize, it completely kills the authenticity and the nuances of the performances when directors and editors do that stupid shit. It's like seeing fake blood that looks bright red instead of the actual color. Authenticity/truth should matter above all else and only an actor's director would know that.
@totalbliss16 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Gilligan, another actor's director. It makes so much more sense to do it this way. Actors feed off other actors and when you're doing the umpteenth take, the performance becomes redundant and contrived. Spontaneity is very important and the reward is some of the best performances for even a sloppily written scene.
@dragankostic266 жыл бұрын
This way of filming ask for superb lighting on both ends, and is not very easy to achieve that with limited budget. I'm sure that director need a small army of set up and lighting engineers to make it right .

Dramatic pause, neck on a swivel, flashes a couple profiles then the line "... there's a flip side to that coin." for me one of the best scenes in filmdom. Both of these guys, handsome to the man crush level. This film looked good ... both of their hair was masculine, sunglasses looked great on them both, they seemed to lose weight for the film or were svelte thin, dressed great. The pace, biorhythm wasn't hurried and allowed you to be hypnotized by the scene. Like some music CDs, there wasn't a bad scene in the film. Voight's character I thought was authentic for what that character might actually have been. Val Kilmer and the rest of the gang were authentic too. (... like I cculd know what guys like this looked like. I tend to believe not nearly as groomed as these guys are.) ... "this stuff here, it sells itself"
