Alabama Hip Hop 101, Featuring Shurlock (Part 2 of 2). 2025.
Alabama Hip Hop 101 is an oral history project that seeks to document the history and growth of hip-hop music and culture in the South. Episodes feature stories from unsung pioneers as well as established artists from across the region. New interviews are accompanied by flyers from classic venues and performances, rare album and CD covers, historic images, and archival footage - artifacts which help preserve the rich, unexplored history of hip-hop in the South.
In this episode: Born in Birmingham, Alabama, LaMilton Hubbart (AKA Shurlock) is a veteran master producer, poet, spoken word artist, and emcee. Though his works are labeled “Feel it Music,” Shurlock’s production genres envelope R&B, Neo-Soul, Dance, Electronic, Hip Hop, Pop and Rock & Roll. He demonstrated his talent from an early age, working his way through the percussion family from xylophone and snare drum to concert piano. His career as a producer and DJ began in high school with a show by his rap group, Gennera3. After attending the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Shurlock began working in recording studios as an engineer. LeNard Brown of The Controllers and Cutting Edge Production recognized his talents while he was engineering and producing at Bates Brothers Recordings and introduced him to Bob Dickerson of Bobdick Management. After acquiring a dedicated fan base, Shurlock began working with a multitude of artists, producers, and managers, including Birmingham’s Mlk & Myld, Emanuel Seal, Tim Barnwell, DJ Nabb, DJ Hurricane, M. A. R. E. E., Exscape, and Ms. J. Andrews of CoatTails Productions LLC. Find more at WoodGrayne Entertainment.
Alabama Hip Hop: 101 is produced by Patrick Johnson of Blaq Angel Media for the Southern Music Research Center.
