Hi everyone! I study Kathak (Indian classical dance). The reason why people potentially perceive this choreography as Indian is possibly due to some cultural markers. They frequently use the Anjali Mudra (Namaste pose) throughout the choreography. Moreover, they also greet each other with an Adab pose (e.g. 0:50) which is an Indian muslim greeting. The belly dancing (raqs sharqi) on the other hand is mostly associated with Arab/Middle Eastern culture. Apart from this, the choreography is mostly culturally ambiguous and therefore Orientalist (i.e. western construct of the East).

This is my take. Agrabah was supposed to have its own culture that mixed Asian and Middle Eastern cultures into one. So it has elements of both Indian and Arabic dance choreography in the dance as well. You've also got to remember that you have actors in this who are of Egyptian, Arabic, Iranian, Tusinian and Indian descent. They're multicultural, therefore it's best to reflect that in the film as well.

To everyone sayin it’s so “Indian” I think you could definitely explain it more in detail but as an Indian I would say a lot of steps in this were Indian. Ex. The flute, the peacock and the hip swaying. This movie rly hinted tha they might have also been Indian and half Arabic maybe. I mean she had a pet tiger which is literally one of the major symbols for India and it’s name was Raja. Which is Indian name. I’m rly not sure but seems like they take some inspiration from Indian royalty.

People saying they're dancing "Indian", let me tell you that's not even a dancing style. India has a range of various styles of dancing styles. But this is not one of them. Maybe Bollywood comes closer to it, but not fully though. Folding one's hands and shaking head don't make it Bollywood. We refuse to take it as one. :3

For people complaining about this looking Indian more than Arabic...... South Asia has been influenced by Persian culture since history. Of course it looks similar. But as a South Asian, I can tell that the music is Arabic not Indian. And only like half of the dancing steps/methods in this scene are kind of similar to Indian culture.

The dresses seems indian to me And many Arab people themselves are commenting they have never seen something like this
@swostikasharma9647 Жыл бұрын
@@Misty_Tomboy_Mermaid You expect them to wear bra like tops like in animations? 🤣 And then it's a production from western society, you can't expect them to go all out historically accurate stuffs. 😂 Indian dresses aren't completely like that design either. The heavy jewels and heavy materials and fabric is similar to South Asian (as I said Persian culture has influenced South Asian culture since history dresses fall under culture category too) but design is modern-ish with little bit of traditional mixed.
