You know, growing up I watched this movie a lot because my dad was obsessed with it. I never understood why until now: he was a "street rat", too. He immigrated here in the early 90s and was basically treated the exact same way as Aladdin was by his American boss. Now the movie seems hella deeper.

Interesting. When I've previously watched Aladdin, I took the lesson that everything comes at a price. Genie and Jasmine have power and wealth but at the cost of freedom. Aladdin gets the girl but at cost of his friends. I never saw it as a commentary about freedom and class. That makes more sense than my original interperation of the film.
@MissPumpkinJuice7 жыл бұрын
My only lesson was: "Man, Agrabah is a hell hole". I mean, Sultan and Genie had every opportunity to end poverty, but naaaah, let's leave it as it is and just spent few more millions on a royal wedding. Government at its finest. Citizens of Agrabah are doomed :D

I always felt that Disney films were written by someone who feels quite powerless or freedomless. Alladin, Cinderella, Tangled, princess and the frog, the little mermaid etc They are all fights for freedom and that is why I relate so deeply to them ❤️ and wish for my happily ever after

Aladdin is one of my favorite movies. Even though, I never looked at it, with this concept of power, control, and freedom. It's simpler elements were there. I think that's the issue many people miss because the genie represents the laughter to the real pain of not having resources to move up in society. We do this in our lives all the time, miss the bigger picture because we think it'll solve our problems. Jafar could also be the malignant narcissist that doesn't care how he gets what he wants, by any means necessary. Which is very Machivillian in his approach to life and power. I've watched countless critiques about how everyone in Aladdin is selfish and short-sighted. Which is true to an extent. However, without recognizing the realities of their social structure, limited power, and freedoms, it's very very easily overlooked.

I LOVE YOUR HAIIIIIIIR ALEXIS.
@seir3236 жыл бұрын
Excellent comment. I feel like as a kid, I was always like 'why are you short-sighted and selfish?' while also realizing that there were bigger structures at play - as an adult with more life experience lol, I see how those structures narrow the characters' world views. They all want what they don't have, not realizing that it won't make them happy on its own. This movie's great at showing the consequences of that short-sightedness and overcoming it. You also made a totally great issue about how the genie represents the sort of sad clown, how comedy is used to mask - or vent- pain and frustration. I think the people who thought he was just a goofy character didn't see the true depth.
@bunnyslope10494 жыл бұрын
Watching this made me realize how existential this movie is. The idea is you have freedom but that comes with the duty to use it responsibly (including not infringing on other people's freedom). Genie has no power so he cannot use it responsibly, even when he wants to.

Honestly how do you put these thoughtful, insightful videos out so fast? I swear you remind me of Lindsay Ellis because you always have a fresh take on these things. Not like the other huge channels like Screen Junkies and Cinemasins who, are fun to watch don't get me wrong but they usually all parot one another's points and it's boring. For the quality of these videos, I'm stunned at how often you get them out. Is there a whole team behind this channel? Or just one person?

Cinemasins is known for making up "problems" that don't exist just to be funny so I wouldn't lump those idiots in with anything, however Lindsay Ellis is awesome. I don't agree with all her points because I think she also misinterprets some things in film but she is actually trying to be genuine and overall is very smart. This channel does a superb job as well from what I've seen of them so far. :)
@victini95955 жыл бұрын
@@princesseuphemia1007 I agree. Even if I don't actually agree with all of Lindsay Ellis' problems like her issues with The Little Mermaid, it never feels like she is nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking like Cinemasins. It's fine if people like that for fun but at the end of the day, videos like this are at least trying to say something about the film. I find it far more engaging to think about the themes of a movie than nitpicking little details.

The irony is that Jafar had the perfect balance between positive and negative liberty, having a prestigious job and influence, and at the same time less social constraints than, say, Jasmine or the sultan. Between Aladdin, Jasmine and the genie, he had the most freedom and resources at his disposal to live a happy life for himself, and help others achieve theirs. His greed and selfishness ended being his downfall, taking away all the freedom he had.

“In the first movie we felt like she (Jasmine) didn’t have enough of a goal, it was really just to meet a guy. And here she wants to do more, she wants to save her world of Agrabah, she wants to play her part in leading her kingdom.” - Dan Lin (Producer for the Live Action Aladdin remake) “There are so many amazing new things about the character in this adaptation - I could literally go on for an hour! Everyone involved in this project *weren’t afraid to really just rip things down and start again,* especially the Princess Jasmine character, because it’s so important to get that right,” - Naomi Scott (Jasmine’s live action actress) Now if only Disney was hiring people with actual common sense who watched the original movie and understood its themes like in this video, but unfortunately we’re stuck with complete imbeciles behind the scenes of these remakes who hold only the most shallow and surface level perception and just outright contempt of the source material.

Very interesting. I'd never looked at Aladdin this way before. Though, it seems you left a few things out of your analysis that might undermine this reading a little bit: At the ending of the movie Agrabah is still a strongly class-based society, a monarchy. The sultan still has all of the political/economic power, and the city is still full of poor people like the other two homeless orphans from the beginning. Also, it's interesting to me that the genie is continually denied the basic part of freedom that is a name. Even at the end of the movie he is still addressed only as _what_ he is, not _who_ he is.

You know, for the longest time, the ending to Aladdin kind of bugged me when I was younger: "What do you mean you had the power to change the law? We went through all this for nothing!" But as I got older and began to understand the concept of themes and messages, and with this video, I began to realize the Sultan is just as trapped as everyone else. It's clear from his introduction: He thinks he HAS to go through with this outdated law, possibly out of tradition and custom and has very little power to change it. And it's VERY clear with his first interaction with Jafar in the beginning of the movie: He is trapped in a situation where he has no power, despite his position. Jafar bends his FREE WILL to get what he wants throughout the whole movie, from his wife's ring to forcing his own daughter to marry him and it's only when Jafar's staff is broken later in the film and realizes he's been tricked, (and all three of our trapped characters are together at this point, I noticed) does he start to realize that he has more power and freedom to do as he pleases...and he ultimately does by the end of the movie (: I just love Aladdin and I LOVED your Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella videos, all very insightful and made it me love them even more (:

What's interesting to me is that this current generation of heroines are all about subverting the princess tropes, but Jasmine herself is a subversion of the classic princess. She's the first Disney Princess to have grown up in a privileged lifestyle and as a result she has no real friends, she's never been outside the palace walls and she's bound by the law to marry by her sixteenth birthday. And she has to deal with being treated like a prop in a game of chess or else a trophy to be competed for. Going back to your great point about liberty, she realises that her lifestyle does have its advantages - if she wasn't the princess then Aladdin probably would have been killed by the guards.

For me, the question of what is freedom and what is not is embodied through the genie: He has divine and omnipotent powers, but can't use them in his own will, his position even deprives him from making or standing for his moral choices even though it breaks his heart to comply an evil wish.

This analysis is amazing... I loved how I learned the concepts of negative and positive liberty... ironically, given the fact that this movie takes place in the arabic world,... many refugees must struggle between the choice for positive or negative liberty: choosing for all wealth and necesities in their homecountry but being surpressed by authorities (in the most cruel ways) (yasmine), or for the freedom to do and think what they want but without the tools the get it (aladdin)... Not sure if anybody was interested in the comparison but this analysis just made me think of it :) and of course the refugees' situation is much more complicated than just the opposite between positive and negative liberty but they do expierence a big struggle with the concept of freedom

9:44 To sum that last part up Jafar always put his self-interest first and that's what lost him his freedom.
@animefan775 жыл бұрын
Actually Jafar did understand freedom- according to himself and made more explicit in the remake, Jafar was once a commoner like Aladdin that used his means to work to power. However, the pursuit of it through manipulation and deception made him forget the value of freedom as he constantly views his position is at risk if the Sultan somehow got the resolve to resist his mind control or Jasmine, the stronger willed- decides to banish or execute him for his corrupt ways or have her would be spouse do it in the case that she got married and coaxed him into doing so- so he wants a higher position that he doesn't have to worry about such things. He doesn't appreciate the fact that he's in a very powerful position of being the advisor to the Sultan- literally controlling him like a puppet to get any action done and could wort case scenario- abdicate his position escape to another weaker willed kingdom to rule under or use his manipulation to serve as the potential puppet master to the new ruler if Agrabah got invaded by another nation. Instead he seeks to be Sultan, which is already a fragile position wrought with the potential of assassinations, being undermined by potential rebellions if the people and court decide to dethrone him. He's thinking of the restrictions of the rank and immediately abandoned his long sought after goal as an impulsive afterthought to become a sorcerer. He then decides to become a Genie, not realizing the full potential of his new abilities as a sorcerer that could in theory surpass the powers of the Genie if he learned to test the limitations and maximize them to their upmost limits. So he becomes a Genie, thinking of the perks of being the most powerful entity (until beings like Chaos arrived) in the movie of being a godlike being that's unchanged- not realizing he's now by the rules, he's now a bound servant that's at the mercy of his master's whims or having his lamp destroyed by anything. So in pursuing power, he's put in a position that he's at the top of power, but he's now completely without freedom- all because he wanted the perks of power without realizing the limitations.

Please don't stop making these videos! I LOVE THEM!!! I'm an aspiring screenwriter and this video showed me another example of how theme is done in a film. Correct me if I'm wrong, the theme in a film should come from the desires and actions of the characters. That's how you make it natural. I also noticed that, like Batman Begins, there are four characters that represent two sides of a concept, but also the extremes of depravity in an issue or concept. Keep up the good work you guys!

Great analysis. Many scholars claim that one of the main themes of the original Aladdin story is social mobility, something that the Disney movie captures very well, increasing the stakes. Also, that the possibilities of achieving your life goals through magic are limited and ultimately doomed to fail, if you only count on it. I strongly suggest to read it, since it's longer and more complex.
