It's December here in New England, and I am about to seal my first alaia. Don't wait til summer, build one now! :)

The board should definitely be longer and wider. the more surface area the board has, the easier it is to catch wave for sure, it needs to be able to hydroplane without sinking. The shorter and narrower it is, the more energy it needs from the wave to get it planing on the surface of the water. With a board that short you would probably need to be kicking as well as paddling to catch a wave. With a longer, wider board (in the 7', 16"-19" range) you can plane on the surface with greater ease.

@BEEBEE159... Also, paddling Alaias is, i think, the biggest part of figuring out how to ride them. Its not like any other surfboard because while lying still on the water, it wont float you on the surface. The way an Alaia supports a surfer is through forward movement. It takes lots of paddling effort to keep the board moving forward and thus planing on the surface of the water or "floating". Once you figure out how to keep the board on top of the water, sliding into a wave comes naturally :)

How funny all that cash and R & D in surfboard shaping and you can surf pretty well on a plank lol. Nice to know that when we run out of oil for foam blanks and materials for modern surf board making we can still surf on good old wood ay!

with a single concave running along the back 1/3 of the board. the width is around 16-17in with the wide point very far foreword, about a foot-1.5 ft from the nose. the outline gets narrower at about at the same place the concave starts, and the tail is either square or swallowtail and between 12 and 14 in. wide. good luck sliding and gliding!

hey all.. the song is 'teardrop' by massive atack. the wood we use is pine, sealed with a lot of linseed oil and few topcoats of beeswax and/or paste wax. an easier and more effective seal can be done with any kind of waterproofing varnish or deck sealer. all of our materials in this movie were purchased at home depot. the dimensions of the boards ridden in this video were between 6' and 6'2" long

Love the clip! Glassy perfection, you guys make it look easy. ...Just finished making my second alaia ~ tested it out yesterday, it goes great! Such a crazy feeling, fast too. ...Wondering if you would care to elaborate on what you've done with your boards in terms of rail shape? Mine's very basic. Slightly less than 3/4" thick at the rail, square all the way through the length, with things softening out as the board tapers to the nose.

If it worked for my kids, I was planning to make one for myself. I love the idea that the Alaia glides effortlessly. FYI I am 5'8" and 165 lbs (all muscle of course :-). Does anyone out there have any advice for me? Thank you.

It is paulownia wood and it is already water tight so you dont have to seal it. "magic wood"

Please help! I just got through trying an Alaia I made for the first time; and I am totally disappointed. The board has no floatation; and, when I get on the board to paddle for a wave, the whole board just sinks below the surface of the water. How on earth do you paddle these things? Does making the board longer help? This board was actually made for my kids (pine wood, 5'6" long, 14.5" wide, sealed with spar varnish to increase the strength); but they couldn't use it. So I gave it a try...

@urmomlikesheb No actually I have ridden my surfboards without fins. I rode my 8'11" longboard without fins and my 6'3" fish. And I don't use my hands to turn the surfboard. I would have to lean on the turns for the rails to dig into the for it to turn. At some cases the my longboard would slide perpendicular to the wave, similar to breaking on a snowboard. So let me ask you have you ridden a board without fins? If you want I can Go Pro it to prove I have surfed without fins.
