In the 1960's and early 1970's General Motors had a special lease program for NASA Astronauts to get custom Chevrolet Corvette's for $1 a year on a lease. Nicknamed "Astrovettes." The car seen here was owned by Alan Bean for one year and was custom made for the Apollo 12 mission. The other two vehicles owned by Dick Gordon and Pete Conrad are still missing, likely either destroyed or owned overseas. The astronauts were integral in the design process, which was done by legendary industrial designer Alex Tremulis.

Side note - the man who bought this car at auction in 1971 bought it for $3,230!!! How crazy is that?!

Inflation calc says that's around 21,000 US dollars today. Quite a steal for a muscle car

Thanks for this piece of history! I love the stories of the astronauts and their Corvette's. Very cool personal story about your connection to Mr. Bean as well.

I met Alan at Maui during our art publisher's annual seminar I was the artist to speak to a few hundred gallery owners after his presentation. I was nervous being the new artist with our publisher and at break time, he reassured me about speaking in front of hundreds of folks in the audience At the next year's seminar at Hilton Head, he was on the beach pointing out to a few of us where they had been on the moon. Pretty surreal listening to stories at sunset about walking on the moon! A high point in my artistic career!

I too spoke to Alan on the phone. I worked on the Space Shuttle ET for 27.5 years. I sent his publishing company a letter asking if I could contact him as he was a personal hero on mine. A couple of weeks later, I was waxing my car and the phone rang and it said Alan Bean!!! We spoke for 30 minutes. He was truly perhaps the nicest guy I ever spoke with. He gave me some NASA work advice too. Sure wish he was still with us.....

A shame you couldn’t do that documentary with his participation. He was a next level thinker in a way some of the other astronauts were not.

There's a car that's always parked around Adam's Morgan which has DC plates that indicate it as a "historic vehicle." Now I'm wondering if it's part of this exclusive shortlist of historically significant cars. I always just assumed that plate was something the owner picked up at the DMV just because it was an old model, but now I want to know the car's story. Unfortunately, its tires keep deflating.

A very nice homage to his memory. Though I have to ask. Whatever happened to the other astro's cars?
