Composer and pianist Alan Broadbent brings New Zealand Be-Bop [Remember Dizzy saying ”to be or not to bop!”] arranging excellency to the WDR band featuring all the main sections of this marvelous band with special praises to Hans Dekker [drums] for his LISTENING SKILLS [rarity in the jazz business, which includes the likes of Jeff Hamilton, Ignacio Berroa or the fabulous Martin Drew who died way too early at the tender age of 66!]. The depth of Broadbent’s arrangements is brilliant, colorful and scintillating. Andy Haderer [trumpet] provides, as usual, solid sound leadership enriched by a great trombone section and mesmerizing saxophone players, switching seamlessly and effortlessly from clarinet, bass-clarinet, saxophone, flute to piccolo [Karolina Strassmayer featured today on alto saxophone-Don’t Ask Why-]. Broadbent’s arranging skills showcase musical footprints from Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie [A Night in Tunisia], Miles Davis but also to my humble opinion Thelonious Monk [particularly in «Trio» where legacies of «Round Midnight» are traceable].
