I did some street photography while I was in China and I have to say that it was very liberating. The idea that you can create art from just walking or driving down the streets is amazing. Some of my favorite shots have come from this attempt at street photography. Great film, well produced. Congratulations!

I just came across Alans work on Flickr, and am stunned by it. His photos are about the only ones I've seen on there that are really genuinely visually interesting. They are sensational, his ability to sense space, condense a composition, evoke drama, include powerful graphic elements, while making it look effortless and spontaneous. They capture your attention! Even though they are digital, they have that deep contrasty old school feel like Capa's, Kertesz'sor even weegee's pictures. I VERY rarely dish out compliments willy nilly, but Alan is a truly gifted artist

"A conveyor belt for photographing" -- brilliant observation Alan. Sometimes overwhelming. Other times frustrating. Yes, music and photography have much in common -- If there are no harmonics then even the most beautiful scene will be flat and atmosphere-less. I agree with your approach- as you put it "space" // as I put it "location location" are essential to a well created street photo. Cheers from Chicago ----

I follow a lot of street photographers on insta and when I see a new post on there I know it's one of Alan's shots instantly. Great short film SmugMug.

Leica in the right hands is truly magical. Plus credits must be given to the director/editor of this charismatic film.
@Global_14345 жыл бұрын
Any fairly decent camera nowadays can be truly magical in the right hands. You place too much faith in tools and brands.
@parisbase46395 жыл бұрын
@@Global_1434 I don't need your general truth opinion. Lenses have different characters. I've been studying them for over 20 years. Leica lenses have their own color science and touch. Leica, Zeiss, Schneider, Voigtlander, Meyers-Optik are not the same. Less mentioning Fujifilms GF, Canon EF or Ricoh GR. And you are too hasty and superficial to denounce with cliche statement. I do place much faith in tools and brands so to speak, as I do enjoy good artistic works taken with Leica, Diana, Polaroids PX100, Pentax 645, and even pinhole cameras LOL. And they are not the same ! If you can't tell the difference between Leica lens and the others, that's your own inadequacy. With all my knowledge, am I not entitled to have my own preference ?
@Global_14345 жыл бұрын
@@parisbase4639 You talk about how superficial and inadequate my knowledge is about lenses and their corresponding characteristic colours. Yet, Alan Schaller's work is visibly in black and white. Now, refer to your initial 'magical in the right hands' comment.
@parisbase46395 жыл бұрын
@@Global_1434 Can you manage a more intelligent argument ? I don't talk about color characteristics in my 1st statement - "Leica in the right hands is truly magical." It's my praise to Alan Schaller and my appreciation of the Leica gear. I only said "color science" in my later retort as a broader example to illustrate the differences. Alan is using Monochrom Typ-246 and coupled with a superb Summilux 24mm f1.4 ASPH. Together they worked magic. Study the photos at 1:02, 1:03, 2:40, 3:38, 4:28, 4:55. Study more at other websites, the Leica masters' works, the large prints in exhibition and even some very well-printed photography books. The beautiful grain (some brands only manage ugly artefacts), the rich tonal gradation, the sharpness/softness blend that the lens could manage...etc. So typically Leica. I don't say other brands' cameras can't take beautiful pictures. But the Leica rendering always has this special touch. If you haven't known and seen enough, be modest and respectful. Too hasty to denounce the others would only expose your ignorance, which after all is not a bad thing at all.

Alan, I found this deeply inspiring. I shoot "street-style" as a utility photographer - i.e., shooting whatever is needed for my yoga sangha and community. I was a staff photographer 1972-74 at Runner's World and still (rarely) do sports. Point being, your approach is mine whether for sports, in K-8 classrooms, scheduled shoots or day-long events: it's always about finding ways to prepare the whole "chain" of photographic tools including heart and mind, by releasing the ego's desires and being as completely in the moment as possible. Like you I find it a wonderfully expansive, quietly moving experience. To recap, this film was a sweet, wonderful discovery. Thank you!

True, re: the single location. Here in Seattle, I have many of them that I have used over and over again. Some of my scenes have changed over time, due to demolition and new construction. Some don't exist any longer.
