That 1984 team was one of the best baseball teams I've ever seen

+Edward Bliss;I concur with you on that!! I remember it like YESTERDAY!! I was 13 years old,and noted how the entirety of Southeast Michigan embraced the team as one and just KNEW the Tigs would pull it off,as soon as the first inning of Game 1 was over!! The closest I was able to et to the mayhem outside on Michigan Avenue, was Tireman Avenue @Wyoming,on the Detroit/Dearborn border, watching bumper-to-bumper traffic blaring horns, heading eastward toward the stadium!! Bless You Boys!!

Lou belongs in the Hall next to Trammel, plain and simple. Compare their careers. So very similar it's uncanny

Good players but not everyone gets in HOF and some players you wonder why Not sure Trammel should either but lifetime he was at least a .285 hitter Ozzie Smith made it but people wondered why with a .262 average Aparicio was .262 Tinker was .262 ????????????

@@highwaymaintainer Ozzie Smith could do back flips and he played in St. Louis, one of the the NL's premier teams back then.

I agree. It should have been like it always was; Tram and Lou. What's happened with Lou is a travesty.

@@highwaymaintainer Trammel is a borderline HOFer in my opinion. But he is in. And based on that fact, considering the very special link between these two players, we must compare the two. HR BA OBP RBI R SB GP SSs GG ROY MVP AS WSC Trammel 185 .285 .352 1003 1231 236 2293 3 4 0 0 6 1 Whitaker 244 .276 .363 1084 1386 143 2390 3 3 1 0 5 1 I'd say either way you slice it, if one of these guys is in the Hall of Fame, the other must be too.

Poor Tony Gwynn. He made it to the World Series twice. The first time, his team had to face the '84 Tigers. The second time they had to face the '98 Yankees.

I was a Jr. usher in 1984 (section 203). Best year of my life. BOTH of these men should be in the HOF!! We had suffered for years before 1984. With the exception of the Lions, Detroit was an exciting sports town after 1984. I tell people that the Tigers were first, then the Pistons, and finally the Red Wings - they gave us a lot to be proud of.

I remember that 35-5 start. People talk about them regressing back to the mean after that but come on. What other team has ever gone 35-5 to start a season? That's a simple one to answer, none. The club was solid. They're performance in the post-season proved that. They proved you could win without a big superstar. They were a team. And they played with an an edge. The 68 team still held God-like status. I think it rankled more than a few of them. Funny, now it's the 84 team that gets all the love. Guess that happens when you blow your chance twice (2006, 2012) and go 1 -8 doing it. And now; well, I feel bad for the kids today. At least I saw them win twice. This current iteration, with this owner, and this GM? Good luck ever winning. Too bad. There was a time when The Tigers were the thing in the city. Ernie on the radio, George in the TV booth, Al in right, and later Tram and Lou up the middle with Jack pitching. RIP Tigers. You are missed.

A lot of people do not know it, but Lou Whitaker hit a ball over the right field roof. Burt Hooten was pitching. Not the greatest feat, but it is certainly noteworthy for a 2nd basemen.

The 84 Tigers were one of the greatest teams assembled. But Anderson’s 76 Reds would have swept them, the 98 Yankees and beaten the 27 Yankees.

Damn Detroit, you had my eyes well up for '84 (raised in Chicago). Please make budget ($$$) to hire TV commentators that studied more about the rich history of the Tigers, & mention their STATS. Craig Monroe has MLB experience yes, but no insight/knowledge. He says the same shit & the obvious, over & over again. Crowd fund for someone w/insight, not laziness. #NowATigersFan

Garbey and Castillo and an old Lemon in the lineup don't exactly rival the "27" Yankees........had some decent player stats but not any player even hit 100 rbi.........(2) in the 90's.....Herndon had 43 rbi Bergman had 44 and Evans had 63 Powerful?????? Started 35 and 5 then 69 and 54 So, it was the start

@@waitaminute643 They also had a grueling schedule later in the year. From 7/27 to 8/14 they had five double headers and at one point they had three in a row. Sparky Anderson wrote a book and described their grueling schedule the last couple months of the season.
