Wow! Alan Watts was a genius and a scholar and thought way outside of the normal realm of thinking....his lectures are riveting, and yet very conversational....🙏💖

TLDR: Reincarnation is not about the transmigration of a specific soul, but rather the passing of karma from life to life and the interconnectedness of our lives through patterns and connections. 1. 00:00 🌌 Reincarnation is not about Hocus Pocus, but rather a simple principle related to space and unconsciousness. 2. 02:40 🔁 The fear of eternal annihilation is based on the projection of being shut up in a dark prison forever, but the notion of eternal annihilation has no meaning as it is an attempt to conceive nothingness and non-experience. 2.1 The speaker discusses the concept of unconscious states appearing as gaps or intervals between conscious states, comparing it to the experience of going to sleep and waking up. 2.2 The fear of eternal annihilation is based on the projection of being shut up in a dark prison forever, but the notion of eternal annihilation has no meaning as it is an attempt to conceive nothingness and non-experience. 3. 05:55 🔍 All creatures and people feel central to their experience, regardless of the social structure of the ego. 4. 07:34 🔁 Reincarnation is the sense of centrality in every being, with the evidence being that people die and others are born after them. 5. 10:01 🔁 We are born again after death without memory of previous lives, as the experience of being "I" continues despite intervals of billions of years, and every experience is a part of us. 5.1 After death, the next thing you experience is being born again without any memory of previous lives, as the experience of being "I" continues even with intervals of billions of years. 5.2 Every experience is a part of us, as we are not separate from our experiences, despite the difficulty in understanding due to our identification with the ego. 6. 13:09 🔄 You are not just the sum of your memories, but a recurring tune that can be played again in another life. 7. 15:15 💭 Reincarnation in Buddhism is the passing of karma from life to life, not the transmigration of a specific soul, illustrated by the University of California as a pattern of behavior. 7.1 Reincarnation in Buddhism is seen as an illusion, with the passing of karma from life to life, rather than the transmigration of a specific soul. 7.2 The University of California is an institution that continues to exist despite changes in buildings, students, faculty, and administrative offices, illustrating the concept of reincarnation as a pattern of behavior. 8. 17:43 🔁 Our lives are interconnected biographies, suggesting the possibility of reincarnation through patterns and connections. 8.1 You are not the same person you were 10 years ago, as your body and identity are constantly changing and renewing. 8.2 Our lives can be seen as interconnected biographies, like different colored spots in a mosaic, suggesting the possibility of reincarnation. 8.3 Patterns and connections in our lives can be seen as a form of reincarnation, similar to the patterns and formations found in the structure of a muscle.

Nice. Well put. This is currently being called Generic Subjective Continuity. That term was coined by naturalist philosopher Tom Clark in his essay "Death, Nothingness and Subjectivity". Tom is a fan of Watts. Sam Harris did a podcast episode on it called "The Paradox Of Death".

The question is, what are we reincarnating to? Must it be human?
@whatweshouldknow56487 ай бұрын
Dolores Cannon always said we could come back as anything, even a roach. This is why we should never kill anything. We step on bugs, then the bug has to find another body and we incur karma. So it's a never ending lesson.

If we reincarnate in our first life what was the cause of karma in that life.

@@fumarate1 whatever we had an effect on. Lots of things, cut someone off in traffic and didn't realize it, that person gets angry, hits another and all because you cut them off. Everything has a cause and effect no matter how little we may think it is.

All it must be is aware! You see, your problem is tied up with the notion of memory. To be born as a bullfrog would seem quite strange if you remembered having been human. Being a bullfrog is as natural as being a human being, though! See, why do you feel that being human is the only ticket with the purchasing power to afford you an incarnation? Isn't it because you're human? But you could just as easily have been a snake, or a horse, or an altogether alien (to us) species living in the Andromeda galaxy! It makes no difference to the sensation of being 'I'.

where does he get into how to reincarnate as a particular "I". he say's we'll get into it, but where is that talk available? anyone know? thank you

I don't have a link for you, but I remember hearing his logic on this, and it goes something like this: If you want to know who your grandfather became after his death, what you're going to do is something like a roarschach test; you're going to look for living human beings who possess the qualities your grandfather possessed, for example. It's like constellations, or the shape of clouds, in that the perceived shapes are projections of the mind. So, any lines of continuity between specific incarnations are seen as projections of the mind, and different minds will see different connections. I hope I've gotten the point across properly. You've probably guessed by now, but he wasn't suggesting that there was a way for individuals to 'choose' their next incarnation, although the way he phrased it in this particular lecture does seem to give that impression in my opinion. 🙏
