FYI, there are real historic account of the historical Canute giving a speech about the tides. "The story of King Canute and the tide is an apocryphal anecdote illustrating the piety or humility of King Canute the Great, recorded in the 12th century. In the story, Canute demonstrates to his flattering courtiers that he has no control over the elements (the incoming tide), explaining that secular power is vain compared to the supreme power of God. The episode is frequently alluded to in contexts where the futility of "trying to stop the tide" of an inexorable event is pointed out, but usually misrepresenting Canute as believing he had supernatural powers, when Huntingdon's story in fact relates the opposite. " (Wikipedia) Thorfinn's speech always gives me the chills evyertime I watch this episode.
@discipleofthecapedbaldy9628 ай бұрын
There's a passage in the bible mentioning God's power along the lines of "able to command even the tides". I don't know if or how familiar Canute actually was with the bible (though I'm guessing Yukimura looked into that and it wasn't for no reason that he showed Canute studying Christianity), but it's interesting to me that there seems to be a connection between that bible verse and Canute's action, which I don't think I've ever seen associated before. It's not a subject I'm especially familiar with though (but I'm surprised at how many people have never heard of the story of Canute commanding the waves - for whatever reason I seem to remember coming across it quite a few times when I was younger).
@grey-f-o-x8 ай бұрын
@@discipleofthecapedbaldy962 maybe you live in Scandinavia which is why you came across the story a lot? the rest of the world doesn't really even know about Canute or any Norse king for that matter, we only learn about Lief Erikksen and Bjork lol
@discipleofthecapedbaldy9628 ай бұрын
@@grey-f-o-x Bjork XD It's the other side for me though, as I'm in England. So yeah it was almost certainly something I first heard in a history lesson. I feel like there may have been an old film that depicted the scene too, but I'll be damned if I can remember. You're right though, Canute's conquests weren't anything like on the scale of an Alexander or Genghis, so it makes sense he's not well known.
@zombeaver696 ай бұрын
Framing this into what Canute is actually fighting (war/human ambition/strife), you really do need a monumental force to stop it. How do you kill a concept? It's a rebellion against the very nature of humanity. He believes he can create stringent enough global controls to at least stifle it, but his goal is ultimately impossible, like pushing back the tides. Thorfinn's goals are likewise impossible. You cannot escape suffering, as suffering is a part of us. When you cannot escape or control the tides, what else can we do but ride them? Focusing on what we can control, and the suffering we can prevent is the most logical path then

"I have no enemies." Vinland Saga isn't just a great anime, manga, or story, it's something every human being should see. This should be shown to those in power who have so much control over the lives of their citizens and fates of their nations. I'm not saying all conflicts would cease because that's naïve thinking, but it would decrease. Just think how much sadness and cruelty in this world would be spared us if we simply talked and listened to one another with the intent to understand instead of judge, criticize, or win the argument.

Canute is an incredible man... you kind of dismiss him too much, especially because Cnut actually succeeded. He united the Northern countries and so pacified them, at least during his generation. He couldn't really end the Viking age completely, that happened in 1066, but he set the groundwork. Thorfinn's solution is personal, Cnut's is universal

they have the same goals, but their methods are in conflict, you can call Canute crazy, but his method is still the popular one even in 2024 (just look at the world leaders that WE voted for, even Obama), Thorfinn is the sanest one but his pacificism would get him laughed out of a political debate, this is why IMO Vinland Saga is so relevant today even though on paper it's about Vikings from centuries past

Fun fact: Canute is enacting eminent domain. Something most governments can legally do to your property. Basically appropriate it for the "greater good." Yes, even in America. And they can forcibly remove you. I guess the saving grace is that with the law the way it is now the government must pay you the value of your property. Unfortunately they also determine the value lol.

*Canute reveals his ultimate goal: to build a paradise on Earth, which he views as an act of rebellion against God's logic.* ☮🕊🌍 He believes that humanity can't find happiness under God's rule and that the current state of the world, filled with chaos and destruction, is a result of people being abandoned by God. Canute sees the Vikings, who are known for their violent and destructive behavior, as a prime example of this abandonment. He believes that these people, who commit sins as they wander lost, need to be saved in order to build a true paradise. To achieve this, Canute plans to unify and guide the Vikings, using their combined strength to defy God's rule. He sees himself as the only one capable of this task, and he is willing to go to great lengths, including war and conquest, to accomplish it. 🤴🏼👥👥👥 In essence, Canute's statement about defying or fighting God is a metaphor for his ambition to change the world order and create a utopia on Earth, contrary to what he perceives as God's flawed design. To better understand Canute you can think of the strict rules he imposes on his vassals; no looting, pillaging or dueling; all vices of Viking culture. All of these must be removed from his paradise. But to do this, he must first conquer all of the vikings to get them into the fold. Only once it's done will he be able to pacify them all, as he now wields all the power. *It's very much like Thorfinn's vision of a utopia, only Canute wants to seize it by any means necessary, with diplomacy first. They are two sides of the same coin.* Canute, for all intents and purposes, is a very progressive king. His display at the end wasn't to show how delusional he was but how powerless he was to do anything on his own.
