Rice Heatpack Tutorial: In this video we show you how to make a rice heating pad or you can use this as a trivet in your kitchen to place your hot saucepans or teapot on,.the choice is yours. They are made with just 2 layer cake squares (10" x 10" squares of fabric) and are so quick and easy to make .
Just fill with rice and spices or essential oils of your choice and heat in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds or until you reach the desired level of heat. The smell is divine.
You don't need to heat in the microwave if you are using this as a trivet for your hot pans. And if you use rice, cloves and allspice as a filler, your kitchen will smell divine as the heat from the pan warms up the spice and releases the fragrance.

Wow! Thank you! My daughter made this for me years ago at a church activity days for girls, and I use it all the time...until tonight when I'm hurting a LOT, (I heat it in the microwave for a couple of minutes and use it on my body pain!) but no one knows where it is! So I came to see how to make one. You gave clear, complete instructions, and I will be making this in the next few days! I appreciate it so much. Sincerely, a new subscriber! :) P.S. For those in a hurry, you can just use an old sock, fill it with rice and tie the end--that's what I'm using tonight, but your design is much prettier and nicer to lay my back on.

Thank you Christine. Nice tip about using an old sock in an emergency. I have made quite a few of these trivet/heat pads now and I add various scents to them. I toss them in the linen cupboard, use some for trivets and some as heat pads. They make great gifts as well.

Do you add only spices-like cloves, or can you use lavendar oil? (I have hesitated to do anything that might cause the rice to mold or sprout!!)
@alandacraft
@alandacraft 7 жыл бұрын
I have used essential oils. Just work the oil into the rice before adding it to the heat pack. I can't guarantee that the rice won't go mouldy or sprout but I haven't had any problems as yet. You can also use small pebbles or wood chips as filling.

Thank you so much for your tutorial. I made one for my boyfriend last Christmas, initially, he wasn't interested in a heat pad. A year later, out of all the gifts I gave him this is the one he used daily on his hands. Loves it! Says it's the best ever and doesn't slide around due to the channels. About to make another for my sister.

Here is a question for an idea I'm having, and all answers are appreciated. We LOVE these bags, and after buying 4 in the past, I started making my own. I'm hosting a bridal shower, and would like to make/give these as a party gift/favor. For instance, if the theme is "at the beach" using seashell fabric; or "love" using heart fabric, etc. I would print out the poem and wrap each with ribbon. Is this a weird favor or a useful favor?

I can't see why not, although I haven't tried it Karen. There are so many lovely fragrances available these days, and I do have a preference for rose, vanilla and lavender. But I drink herbal tea and they do have a lovely scent so I'm going to try it next time I make these. Should be fine as long as they don't get wet. Thank you for the suggestion.😀

@alandacraft
@alandacraft 8 жыл бұрын
+Somtapa Bhattacharya Well that's a hard one. There are so many variables, it depends on the fabric you use, how much use it is going to get, whether it gets wet, what they are going to be using for - heat pack or trivet. I really can't give you definite answer on this one Somtapa.
@ImmaMink
@ImmaMink 8 жыл бұрын
+Somtapa Bhattacharya - Truly depends on how much they are used and how long they are heated in the microwave, but about 2 years I'd say. My husband likes 7 minutes which is WAY TOO LONG and too hot; but he wraps it in a kitchen towel to use and it stays hotter longer. 3 to 4 minutes is sufficient. The fabric can scorch from heat, get holes, and also get old and dirty looking. Some people make removable/washable covers. When the fabric gets ratty, new bags can be sewn and the rice transferred into the new bags.

I have just noticed that my response to you didn't save. I do apologise. You can use small stones that are available from aquarium suppliers. We haven't had a problem with the rice as yet, but as Nicole has stated she uses Barley, so you may like to try that.

I use the same uncooked rice over and over for years to blind bake my pie crusts whenever I make pie in the oven and have not had any issue with maggots or the rice going "bad." I would imagine this would apply for the heating pads as well, since they are microwaved over and over again.

My rice pads always smell so nice of essential oil at first, but then the smell fads so quickly and I just smell rice! Have you found a solution to this problem? I’m not sure if there’s a trick to make the scent stick for longer. Maybe soaking the rice in a certain way, adding the oils in strategically, adding oil to the fabric itself, etc. Any advice you have would be so appreciated!
@alandacraft
@alandacraft 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Anna, depending on what scent I am using, I add pot pourri in with the rice. This tends to absorb some of the oils and the scent seems to last a bit longer. Otherwise I just add a few drops to the fabric on the finished rice pack, as it fades.

A lovely quick tutorial, thanks. I've seen other projects using rice and wondered what would happen if the fabric got wet? Will the rice swell/go mouldy? I have some very tiny stones I was going to use for a door stopper - maybe I could use those instead (if making a trivet) and no reason why I couldn't put some spices/oils into the mix :)
@alandacraft
@alandacraft 9 жыл бұрын
+Lesley Gilbert You would want to avoid using these around too much water but getting them damp every now and then shouldn't be an issue. These are so quick and easy to make and use only a tiny bit of fabric so even if they are ruined, a new one can be sewn up pretty quickly. But using tiny stones might work. It's definitely worth a try.

I guess it depends what you are using it for. If you are using it as a trivet to put saucepans on it will eventually start to get grubby looking and you will want to replace it. If you are using it as a heat pack it should last for ages. And when it wears out it is fun to make another one.
