I don't think most people are going to consider the Middleton as being a great value speaker at its retail price but personal use case and preference are always going to be very much a part of any purchase decision. I like the aesthetics of the Marshall speakers and it makes me equally happy when I look at my Stockwell 2 as what I hear out of it when it's played but I waited for a sale and wouldn't have bought it at full price. The Middleton doesn't sound like a bad speaker (for low level listening) but it would have to get a pretty hefty price cut to make it worthwhile to me. Thank you for another excellent review and comparison, Alan! 😁👍👏

I had the Middleton and the Flex and the flex was just warmer. I did a blind test with my mum and 4/5 songs she chose the Flex too. Bass on the Marshall is real nice. I was surprised because the speaker has multiple outlets but it very much sounds like the sound is coming from the speaker whereas with the Bose has this way of surrounding you.

Alan I own an old RIVA Turbo X and it too has woofers firing front and the sides , plus passive radiators front and back. This speaker does give you a stereophonic sound , especially with surround and turbo on. I also own a damson Vulcan , which has the same set up, but produces deep bass. The RIVA kinda copies the JBL’s xtreme 1 with pushed mid bass… but it has good thump.

I think it was bigger in the states. I call it the brick, still to this day it’s my go too speaker when I’m outside ( no rain) working in the yard or decorating (Halloween or Christmas). It would be speaker you would like warm, full bodied sound with some thump. It was made to knock out the Bose soundlink mini when it was developed… but like I said earlier it was shaped and the size of a “brick”.

Alan im not taking away anything from Bose, their innovation in speaker design from the mini to their home 1 2 3 system,which I also own, has great sound. But your right, it’s the physics of air space , compression, speaker materials, speaker placement and electronics that can make or break a speaker. I owned an old Marantz stereo system with Altec Lansing “big box “speakers. The amp didn’t throw out that much power and the speaker wires were minuscule, but the sound was clear, super deep bass and loud. It wasnt so much the amp as it was the speakers. Big surface area, open air because of the box size, maple wood for good sound resonance ,ported and large magnets. Even with the low wattage and voltage, the sound could shake my home. Like you said flat speaker usually flat sound…. Sorry for the long winded post.

@@lymedog3176 no no i welcome posts like yours, its very interesting how these companies have to make trade-offs somewhere for a cheap speaker or charge a ton for something that belies its size. modern amps help a lot of course, you couldn't do this with small speakers years ago.

its marketing nonsense. pseudo surround, it can sound more open and airy but there is always a trade-off. its just psychoacoustics. its not a format. im talking about these types of speakers. of course in its pure form such as atmos with appropriate speakers it sounds great. you have to remember the likes of the middleton are not decoding a format like dolby but simply processing two channel audio.

@alanrossreviews Marshall Middleton vs Soundcore Motion X600. I know both are nowhere near it, but which one do you think has the flattest frequency response & the best reproduction of bass frequencies? I’m a new music producer & sometimes make music on the go. Being able to hear bass frequencies is particularly important to me, since I know not all speakers can reproduce them well. Especially portable speakers. Directivity is also important but not as, since I won’t be moving around too much. Thanks in advance. 😁

x600 has no deep bass and for me the bass it does have distorts badly. Middleton is bass monster below 50% but becomes a totally different speaker over 50%. the only speaker i have have that is quite flat and has deepish bass is the hk go play 3.

The Middleton is my front runner atm… feel free to tell me that the Middleton is a stupid option if it is. 😂

@Alan Ross Reviews Thanks for your reply! Not sure about my taste either haha.. no audiophile or purist but I am a critical listener. Own a bunch of headphones and not easily pleased with the sound quality. So more audiophile like sound signature is preferred even though that is not obtainable through bluetooth.. but you know what I mean. Did not do any research on w-king yet but will look into that (your videos ;) ). Have not considered a 1.1 setup because everyone was talking how great they are in stereo. Something to think about... After watching you videos I was actually looking at the motion boom plus haha. The footprint is a bit large but could probably make it work, even though the misses doesn't appreciate anything bigger than a charge 5 😅😂 How about listening to that on low volume in a cramped space? That's my biggest concern. My crappy charge 2 sounds better than my new condition xtreme 2 in a tiny space on low volume. With the X2 you can only hear/feel the bass and the rest is gone.

@alanrossreviews
@alanrossreviews Жыл бұрын
its quite a subject so i would suggest having a google because a lot of the arguments are a matter of debate rather than fact. know that done badly both are shit and done well both are good and passives tend to be implemented in a small box as ports need a fair amount of size to be tuned correctly. port vs passive can also be effected by likely speaker placement and cost too. they are driven by the same principal's though thus i say interchangeable from end result perspective. biggest issue with ports of course is port noise, farting, chuffing. passives also have technical issues that don't apply to ports.

@@Yt_ShadowBannedme the key here is what did they compare. people think passive rads are an easy option and just need the same driver as the woofer with no voice coil. but actually they need a different suspension and are not so easy to get right. thus even for me i could not answer who is right or wrong because it really depends on your options. but i see more and more high end gear now opting for passive rads instead of ports.

One tweeter in the front and the other in the back? Yeah, no chance that's going to create a proper stereo image, no matter how much DSP is done, and I don't need to use a test track that has an instrument or vocals panning from left to right to find that out. The Motion Boom with the custom EQ seems to be clear winner here audio-wise - that Middleton was a no-go from the start and the JBL Xtreme 3 just sounded annoying at higher volumes because of that 6kHz peak. I'll bet the Xtreme 3 will stand up to more abuse than the Motion Boom, but how many Motion Booms can you buy for the price of an Xtreme 3? 🙂

We need to nail down what the criteria are for being a “JBL KILLER”. The mere fact that The Middleton is a Marshall speaker (premium brand) and it’s mad expensive are 2 major strikes against it being a JBL KILLER. So even if The Middle sounded better it still wouldn’t qualify imo

Marshall are all over the place with their speakers. They have some good ones like the Stockwell 2 and then others just seem like overpriced garbage. I wonder why that is? Maybe they all sell the same regardless of quality. A lot of people seem to prefer the newer Marshall speakers over the S2 just because they go much louder, even though the sound itself is worse.

Don't buy the Middleton if u like your treble sticking out n bold like on the Bose or JBL. I have it n it always leaves me wondering where the treble is for such a chunky speaker. Even the small emberton 2 has better treble. Overwhelming bass underwhelming treble. I dunno if it's deliberately tuned that way to protect the sales of other or future Marshall speakers.
