Something for you try next time if you're interested. Use rubber tires instead of the blue buckets to hold the molds. Once they're full you can stand on the tires with your feet on either side of the mold and bounce/rock all the air pockets out of the concrete so it settles out nicely. Makes for beautifully smooth finish and super strong stone. Great video Al!

Pro tip for the hybrid stone molds, zip tie all the holes to align the mold, then drill more holes in-between the existing ones to create a tighter bond. That is if you don't have the money for slater molds. Cause a 12" slater mold is 120 dollars after shipping. A 12" eBay mold (which works well) is 85 after tax and shipping.

What also works good for vibration is just getting a piece of 2x4 or a stick and ram it in and out of the hole while you're pouring it. Best thing would be to have a concrete vibrator but not everyone has one of those lying around. Similarly to making the mix too wet, you have to be careful with a concrete vibrator because it will shake the stones to the bottom of the mold.

A week in the mold ? Wow! I made some once with the hybrid type mood but I took them out after 24 hrs. Then I let them sit for about 1-2 weeks and sprayed them with the hose regularly. They ended up being super strong.
@peterbreen30396 жыл бұрын
I have now made 6 Atlas Stones, using the hybrids. My first 2 failed. The next 4 have been really good. This is what I did with those 4. After spraying don’t join the 2 halves. Fill the bottom half almost to the top, so much easier to fill. Then join them. I use butterfly screws and then duct tape to make a tight fit. I consequently have no seepage. I now always use the strengthening fibres, they work. Use a rubber mallet and take along time to beat out the air bubbles. Then I definitely do not leave them for a week. I did this once and it took another week to get them out! Once they are made leave it for at least a couple of weeks before using, longer if you can afford the time. And finally do not drop the on the ground. My rugby club are using them and even dropped on grass they will break. We now using an old pub barrel mat and or old tackle shields. Once made and used they are fantastic. Especially for the functional strength needed for rugby. They make for great competition between the guys and drive up standards. Going to make to lighter ones for the women’s teams today.

Concrete is very strong in compression, but very weak in tension. Rebar is strong in tension, but buckles and bends when compressed. Combining the two makes for a very strong composite material that can be used to make strong and durable structures. The fibers in the concrete are doing the same, but they're also randomly oriented and pointing in different directions, unlike rebar. This means their relative tensile strength vs. rebar is going to be much lower in any particular direction, but they can evenly handle tensile stesses from all directions.

I maybe have a tip for the hybrid mold. Before you spray it with silicone, take some of that tape...and put it inside, exactly where one half of mold meets the other. Cut it in on two areas and push it down a bit...so you can still put the molds together, without the tape intefering with the lips. If you put in the cement...the cement will push the tape up...and close the gap, where the water was coming out...and the edge won't look as bad anymore. I heared devil driver at the end...good taste in music!
@69quato6 жыл бұрын
Easiest way to vibrate such a small volume : Put a sheet of hardwood on top of the mold and use the hammering function of a hammerdrill on top of it. The mold will pick up the vibration evenly all around. Another thing to prevent bubbles would be to prepare the concrete with a bit more water and to pour it while stirring it with a paint stirrer mounted on a drill to drive airbubbles out. Will increase the time to dry , but this is a good thing with concrete , since it gets more stable when drying out slower. The water leaks with the hybrid mold are a problem - the water takes the cement particles with it in the leaking areas and weakens the area considerable. It should be mentioned as well to prevent the cast from frost if you work in a cold climate and from direct sunexposure in a hot one. Just below room temperature throughout the whole drying process (28 days - rule of thumb) will provide the hardest balls xD
