Well, seeing those mountains when you broke out keeps it green as to how critical proper and accurate flight planning is. That is the real deal man. That is CFIT for the ignorant pilot. Incredible journey. Your about the only one trekking across the country to Oshkosh in November lol. Thanks for sharing your journey. As a student pilot, I hope to one day make a trip like this in my 172.

I know for me, this flight wouldnt have happened. My personal minimums would not allow that. I feel in a lot of places I COULD do it but my minimums are my hard line for now. Maybe as more experience comes I can re-evaluate them. But till then they are my yes or no line. Not a grey line. Great flight sir!

@@angleofattack Also I can tell a different attitude all together. In the states especially unmentioned areas of the east coast… it’s like you ask for something like the weather. You’ll get either the bare minimum or some sort of resistance, direct or in their demeanor. But it seems it’s 90% of the controllers are cool, understanding and helpful when you let them know it’s a student pilot on the other end.

@@angleofattack I'm just a low time private pilot, and obviously my personal tolerance for weather is nowhere near what is shown in this video, but I honestly can't imagine how you can consider this to be safe. You're flying in marginal (at best, if not straight up IFR) visibility in the mountains over inhospitable terrain. If it gets ANY worse, in a matter of seconds you're in full IMC in a fully loaded single engine airplane, potentially unable to contact anyone because of those peaks. If this is safe, what would you consider to be unsafe?

Wow, what a great series this is turning into! The mountain flying to Tok was awesome. Most difficult thing seemed to be right off the bat getting out of Anchorage SVFR. The takeoff clearance out of MRI was nothing short of abysmal. Way too long - a monologue of unstandard phraseology. He tells you about helicopter traffic, then states he has visual with you both. Perfect. So tower is applying visual sep to allow 2 SVFR aircraft to operate in the delta simultaneously. That's when he should have given the wind, cleared you for takeoff and been done. But then he displaces separation responsibility on you guys with instructions to maintain visual with a helicopter you haven't reported in sight. Then telling you to turn east when able and report the helicopter in sight. lol, that's completely out of order and not how pilot applied visual sep works at all.

@18:30, Is that snow shower in the Gulkana TAF? Nice ADM. I really love the way you are thinking ahead of the aircraft: assessing and reassessing plan B, etc. But, one very important consideration, which will bite you, is the question of: Is the runway plowed? @17:56, If your primary goes down, you can't just divert to any airport. It's got to be a plowed runway. The Supplement notes Z55 (Lake Louise) as "Unattended....Rwy condition not monitored....No winter maintenance". This is a big winter gottchya. I really like seeing the foreflight screen along with the views from the gopro's. That really helps with our situational awareness of the flight through the pass. And that brings me to my question. When you became aware of the opposing traffic you were snugged up against the right side of the pass with the river and road on your left. But then you decided to turn left and cross the other traffic's flight path to put yourself against the left side of the pass with the river and road on your right? Why? Staying in the position you were in seemed like the safer course. Or maybe the editing just makes it seem that way. Eagerly awaiting the rest of the series!
@angleofattack3 жыл бұрын
After reviewing I could have totally made a different choice. I think in the actual situation I realized we had the road and the ridge that were defined and clearly visible. I also thought the traffic would turn and continue to follow the river right into us. That’s exactly what they ended up doing. So that’s what I think my decision was based on.

Daniel and I actually worked on this in later flights when I finally noticed it. I encouraged him to rarely look at ForeFlight on his lap. If you’re VFR clear, that’s fine to rarely check it on your knee. If you’re IFR or need to be eyes out like in this situation, you need to either have it in your field of view or don’t look at it at all.
