About the aurora borealis - traveling further north definitely isn't going to help if it's summer. I live near the arctic circle and there's no true darkness for about three months, it just gets dim around 4 AM and the sun comes back up a couple hours later. Definitely not gonna see the aurora then. So if that's high on people's list, it's *kind of* important to understand what's happening with the daylight, and it varies tremendously across the state.

Thanks for the great tips, we’re excited about our upcoming trip. 2 questions: 1. Since we can’t travel with bear spray, where can we buy one when we arrive? 2. What brand is your blue backpack? Thank you!
@TrekkingPals
@TrekkingPals 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It is funny I remember the conversation with the person we bought the bear spray from but I can't seem to remember where exactly. It was in anchorage for sure and it was probably walmart or a sports goods store. Usually outfitters and stores with self defense tools/fire arms aisle will have it. My backpack is an Osprey tempest for women, here is the link to it www.amazon.com/dp/B08LP15752/ref=sspa_dk_hqp_detail_aax_0?psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExQUFMTzIxNFpaV1ZOJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMDAyNzMwM0YwWkxXS0VWQ1pHOCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMTUzOTUzNjA4MEMzN0gzSFA1JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfaHFwX3NoYXJlZCZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= Enjoy Alaska!

From Anchorage you can either go north towards Talkeetna or south towards Whittier/Seward/Kenai Fjords. Many areas like this are several hours apart, combined with a daily adventure you may want to plan to explore Alaska in regions. Try to plan your timeframe and trips with this in mind.

How would you maximize a 7day hiking trip?
@TrekkingPals
@TrekkingPals Жыл бұрын
Pick in advance 2-3 hikes that you absolutely want to experience. In my opinion, the Harding Icefield Trail and Reeds lake are a must. Account for the driving distance between trails and check the weather before hand. It rains a lot in August.
@TrekkingPals2
@TrekkingPals2 Жыл бұрын
@@erikdale9145 Depending on the time of the year, the days may be very long or very short. Figure this out before hand and keep it in mind while planning. You may have more flexibility in Alaska than you are used at home because of this. Also, there is one major highway south of Anchorage (Highway 1), if there is an accident or a traffic jam, your only options are to wait or turn around. Give yourself some extra time around your plans. If you get there early, consider that a victory rather than unnecessary rushing. Flat Top mountain is good near Anchorage. Reeds Lake is very fun and rewarding north of Anchorage, and if you head down to Seward, then the Harding Icefield Trail is great, but Kenai Fjords National Park has plenty more to offer than the HIT. Hiking on Matanuska Glacier is a very exciting experience(North of Anchorage) and Crow Pass is a good trail between Anchorage and Whittier (south of Anchorage). Ultimately, it's Alaska, I'm sure you'll have fun no matter what.
