Alaska Vacation Budgeting

The unique experience of visiting Alaska means that you should think differently about your travel budget.
Some of Alaska's most dramatic sights can only be accessed by plane or boat, and most unique experiences (like river rafting, glacier hiking, and dog sledding) require expert guides and gear. You'll likely want to travel around and not stay in one place, but some of Alaska’s most compelling destinations will be hundreds of miles from your previous night’s stop. We suggest planning to spend $400 per person per day for a quality vacation that doesn't cut corners.

Definitely appreciate the brutal honesty of the cost of going to Alaska. It's a dream of mine to photograph the bears at Katmai... but I honestly don't think I'll be able to afford it because the friends I usually travel with have no interest and a solo trip is just too expensive. But who knows... maybe it will happen.

I'll be traveling next month to Alaska, driving from ANC all the way and back to the Artic Circle. Also planning to visit glaciers, Denali and main attractions for10 days. I been organizing this trip since last summer. I will say car rental and todays gas price the only thing to worry about, not even airfare, rest such Airb&B same as everywhere, food just go to Walmart, NP fee same as the other parks, one hour cruise is$45 for example. Also why to pay excursions when Alaska is a wide open space, go explore your self... So you can go on a budget if you organize this in advance. but Yes, food (restaurants) and other things bit pricy but not for a drama. This video very helpful but way over price in everything.. make you think... you can not afford to travel .. . My secret.... I made all reservations 10 months before traveling , do it !! and you will see the different price as today.

Alaska is expensive for sure. I just booked a trip to alaska for 10 days for two people in end of aug to early sep 2023. So far booked everything, not including gas and food, and about $900 worth of airline ticket with Alaska airline credit card points. i come to $2300 total. so far $116 per person per day. adding food and gas, est $160 per person per day? definitely on the budget side. still a lot more expensive than my other trips in lower states.

I from Indonesian.I have been studying Alaska for a long time, I know about the temperature which is cold for me but warm for the people of Alaska, lots of bears, whales, beautiful forests, glaciers, and people who are not very affectionate.

Visiting in November with our 5 yr. Old and another family with four in their party. I am Mostly interested in snowboarding, polar bear sightseeing and anything family friendly. Also, my husband loves breweries. Do you recommend Fairbanks vs Anchorage or the other way around?

I want to plan a family vacation with 2 kids without the Cliché things such as " hiking and backpacking " I want to fly into Anchorage, get a rental car and be able to drive myself to most fun places with exception of places like Denali park or places that are only accessible by train. What do you recommend? Is there List of Family safe activities? And places

Hoping to come this summer. Anyone go an opinion on cruising up from Seattle instead of flying?!
@Alaskaorg

If you cruise up, and then follow it up with a land tour (to include highlights of Southcentral and Interior Alaska -- like Denali) then you sort of et the best of both worlds! Cruises port in Whittier or Seward, then you can work your way north, and fly home from Anchorage or Fairbanks. This is a very popular trip option if you have about two weeks.

A cruise vs road system travel are two very different experiences. Then there is remote/bush travel, remote lodges, and ferry system. There are multiple ways to explore this huge state and each one is different.

Everyone thinking about cruises should look first into the environmental impact of that industry. If you can’t afford going to a place without cutting corners, go somewhere else.
