Hitchhiked to Alaska and back from Iowa, summer of 1973. Was on 6 month delay after high school before entering Marine Corps. Worked on a vegetable farm for Max and Dorothy Sherrod. Max had a 50 pound cabbage entered in the Alaska State Fair at Palmer. Could have been the winter caretaker while they spent the winter in Hawaii and then permanent employee, had I not been on 6 month delay, which I could have gotten out of. Wonder if I would have lived a different life? Flew to Alaska in 1991, to forest fires 90 miles north of Fairbanks. Stayed in Talkeetna 3 weeks on a month’s leave, 1979. Camped in the bush a mile out of town. A guy lent me a double barrel 12 gauge and had me practice unloading and reloading. It was May and the bears were lean and hungry, waiting for the fish. He told me to jump aside if charged and fire broadside. Smoked excellent Colombian Gold with a climber who had just spent 142 days alone on Mt. Hunter. Shortly after, he went solo to climb Denali, and was never seen again.

As an Englishman working the Alaska season as videographer in 2006 and for Princess Cruises, I fell in love with this state. I grew to love cloud and drizzle, salmon bakes and chicks urinating outdoors. One stand out memory of my contract happened every two weeks of cruising…. When our ship docked in Whittier and we spent an over night at a rag tag, rough and ready Anchor Inn run by a rough n tough landlady called Bev. Besides being in one of the weirdest towns I’ve ever visited, it remains one of the most memorable. Everyone seems to reside in one huge tower block and the port completely shuts down during the winter months as it’s shut off from the rest of the state. While I haven’t watched this video yet Nick I am hoping you visited. Here’s to the memories I have of Alaska, “mostly” good but not at all like the tv series Northern Exposure.

The beauty of Alaska is it's land. Not the few cities it has. 2.5 times the size of Texas. Alaska has more glaciers than any other state or country in the world. I went to Kenai Fjords National Park to watch glacier calving on a tour boat out of Seward. Seward is beautiful. Also check out Denali National Park. Best wildlife in North America. Drove from Fairbanks along The Alaska Pipeline for 15 hours one way to Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay on The Beaufort Sea. Stopped along Yukon Crossing, The Arctic Circle, Coldfoot all the way to the Arctic Ocean. Alaksa was unforgettably beautiful.

I have smoked salmon on my salads everyday. I put up close to 30 pints of smoked canned salmon this summer. Have been doing that for over 45 years.

Alaska is a different country. About as related to the lower 48 as Mongolia.

Thank you, Nick, for your videos. I'm from Finland and I love to watch your fascinating videos from the US. America is such a fascinating country. Have you ever considered filming abroad e.g. in Europe or Asia?
