I've been to all 50. 49 in the same car. Alaska was the last state. In 89 I drove there from PA in a 79 Mustang Hatchback with 255k miles on it. Spent 3.5 weeks wandering around up there. Even got to see Mount McKinley under the light of a full moon. Good times.

Somedays, I forget how wacky it really is here. There's a smoldering volcano outside my kitchen window. I fly to and from work. There's an adult brown bear just walking down the road. I've driven a bus on the ocean. I've nearly been hit by a C-17 and a boat. So many wacky situations that I don't fully appreciate in the moment.

Hitchhiked to Alaska and back from Iowa, summer of 1973. Was on 6 month delay after high school before entering Marine Corps. Worked on a vegetable farm for Max and Dorothy Sherrod. Max had a 50 pound cabbage entered in the Alaska State Fair at Palmer. Could have been the winter caretaker while they spent the winter in Hawaii and then permanent employee, had I not been on 6 month delay, which I could have gotten out of. Wonder if I would have lived a different life? Flew to Alaska in 1991, to forest fires 90 miles north of Fairbanks. Stayed in Talkeetna 3 weeks on a month’s leave, 1979. Camped in the bush a mile out of town. A guy lent me a double barrel 12 gauge and had me practice unloading and reloading. It was May and the bears were lean and hungry, waiting for the fish. He told me to jump aside if charged and fire broadside. Smoked excellent Colombian Gold with a climber who had just spent 142 days alone on Mt. Hunter. Shortly after, he went solo to climb Denali, and was never seen again.

As an Englishman working the Alaska season as videographer in 2006 and for Princess Cruises, I fell in love with this state. I grew to love cloud and drizzle, salmon bakes and chicks urinating outdoors. One stand out memory of my contract happened every two weeks of cruising…. When our ship docked in Whittier and we spent an over night at a rag tag, rough and ready Anchor Inn run by a rough n tough landlady called Bev. Besides being in one of the weirdest towns I’ve ever visited, it remains one of the most memorable. Everyone seems to reside in one huge tower block and the port completely shuts down during the winter months as it’s shut off from the rest of the state. While I haven’t watched this video yet Nick I am hoping you visited. Here’s to the memories I have of Alaska, “mostly” good but not at all like the tv series Northern Exposure.

The law and justice system does not work in isolated communities. 11.26.20 my 15 year old son was murdered & North Slope Borough police tried to send home the killer same night with no charges. 2BA-20-00405CR Alaska justice system dropped the murder charge & 2 charges of assault with a deadly weapon for a manslaughter plea deal. I told the District Attorney not to do the plea deal multiple times. 3 boys told the killer to stop. The killer had unloaded a shotgun then reloaded it pointing at my sons head multiple times. I still have no closure or peace for the death of my son.

But i know he is one of my guardian angels now, i can feel he's at peace and that gives me peace as well.

The beauty of Alaska is it's land. Not the few cities it has. 2.5 times the size of Texas. Alaska has more glaciers than any other state or country in the world. I went to Kenai Fjords National Park to watch glacier calving on a tour boat out of Seward. Seward is beautiful. Also check out Denali National Park. Best wildlife in North America. Drove from Fairbanks along The Alaska Pipeline for 15 hours one way to Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay on The Beaufort Sea. Stopped along Yukon Crossing, The Arctic Circle, Coldfoot all the way to the Arctic Ocean. Alaksa was unforgettably beautiful.

Hello Alaska! I came here via the US Army in 1978, divorced the Army in 1981, and stayed. My original home state was California, Los Angeles/Compton. Alaska is HOME for me. I have lived in Fairbanks, North Pole, Anchorage, Eagle River near Palmer, and now near Wasilla. I spent almost 13 years in the US government's control, the Army. I have met folks who left the State of Alaska for years but come right back; it is home for many folks.

It will break everyone's heart in Alaska to hear this, but Nick can't perform any of his smokin' hot Milli Vanilli remixes up there due to the fact it will melt the polar ice cap and create cataclysmic flooding worldwide.

I live on a island on the panhandle of Alaska. Petersburg is a awesome place to visit. We only have like 2 homeless people. The price of eggs here is 8.00 a dozen and 9.00 for a gallon of milk. We don't have large cruise ships thank God. The tourists destroy the soul of a communities.

It's really sad none of the things u see today was happening in the 70's. I gave birth to my son in Anchorage Alaska I 17 years old and it was during the Viet Nam war. I really never seen any homeless growing up.

Nick, did you make it up to Denali National Park on your way to Fairbanks? Mount Denali is the tallest in North America. Go on a Brown Bear watching tour. The Alaskan Moose is the largest animal in North America. Makes me want to visit up there again. Alaska is still pretty awesome despite it's few cities it has. Alaska is 2.5 the size of Texas.

I have a male cousin from South Carolina who married a military career woman in Alaska, he divorced her after 7 months of marriage because he couldn't deal with the long, cold and dark winters. Even after 10 years, I still tease him about it. LOL. I do plan to visit sometime in the future.

Alaska will indeed chew you up, but not in any of the ways you’ll expect. You come in thinking you’ll nearly freeze to death or get attacked by a moose or a bear, but instead you get rained on almost 24/7, nearly get pushed off a mountain, get your tent flooded and filled with slugs, get annoyed by tons of magpies, and become so constipated that you have to literally have to pull feces out of your butthole. And yet, you will still have a (mostly) good time hiking and camping, going down to see the mudflats, making snowballs in the summer. Yes, all of this happened to me last time I was in Alaska.
