What you got are educated wolves, I use a #9 set right in the middle of my snow machine trail. No bait, no scent just a trap in the middle of my snow machine trail. Once you get the trap depth figured out you can drive over the trap slowly without setting it off. Works good for educated wolves.

I see you got frosted up trees like we do here in Wisconsin; man I love how real you guys are, don't change, and the realities of trapping are the realities of trapping, always starts out rough and ya make adjustments and do some fine tuning, and then it all comes together and then success keeps happening; I would've included some pics of the frosted trees around here but KZbin doesn't give you that option

Roger, thanks for the input and for watching. most of the work honestly has been getting trail set good so we can actually get some gear out with the amount of light we got. If we don’t connect we got another trick we want to try on those traps.

Absolutely that's how trapping goes; the days are starting to get a little longer here, but not long enough for me I seem to have that lack of sunshine disease and it's hitting me purty hard right now

The key to trapping wolves is bait stations and let wolves get used to you and your smell as not being a threat to them . Then when the wolves are used to your smell and are comfortable with you , it time for the ambush. All the Wolf trails are established . I like to pick the highest point about a hundred feet from the bait station to set my snares . I would load with about 40 to 50 snares in a 70 foot radius. Once you get one caught in the 70 radius all the other wolves will come in the check out what happened and them too will get caught. I've caught up to 8 wolves at one time using this method. Another perfect location to set up an ambush site is along a creek ,river or lake . Where there is a nice high slope coming down to bank . Wolves like to rest in high locations close to bait stations or a kill site . That's where I would set 30 to 40 snares coming down the slope from there high resting location. When wolves walk down hill they walk with the heads up perfectly to get caught in snares. And with there heads up there is less chance for the wolves to detect or smell your snares. The steeper the slope the better chance you have to catch alot of wolves. I use 12 foot 3/32 cable snares with cam locks and killers Springs . Wolves don't have a chance.

Thanks for sharing! We are headed out tomorrow with a full 5 gallon bucket of snares where with think a kill sight might be. Have not confirmed one yet. Wolves have finally started hangin around again. I think because they might have gotten something

I really enjoy seeing you guys after them. I just missed one today, he went on one side of the tree and my snare was on the other. Dang, it. Some foul language got out on that one. Last check there wasn't a track. This check there were wolf tracks all over the place. Good luck.

Have you ever tried a burned cross set? You’ll see them in old trapping books. Very effective for dogs,fishers, probably wolverines. Just another tool in the box

no - can ya share? have heard of using burned wood as pee post.
@peterjones7288

We cut 4 good poles for drag’s arranged in an “X”. Wire a chunk of bait in the middle of the cross, bed your traps 18”-20” from the centre of the cross, use waxed paper under your trap and pan cover. Cover your trap with a light dusting of ashes from home to blend the set. Put a pile on of grass on the bait and light it on fire. Careful with the heat just enough to smoke the bait, too much can soften trap springs or freeze your trap in. Canines are attracted to fire and they associate it with humans and food. Hope that is a fair enough explanation. Good luck and stay safe out there and trust me we’ve all felt dumber than the dogs, that’s what make even the smallest success so sweet.
