I also would like to know where you purchased your pulleys and how you attached them to your motor. Thanks!!

hi good and practical design you have,, i just wondering what's inside the wheels,, is it needle bearing or something?
@alaskabearhawk12 жыл бұрын
Sure. 2 1/2 in Sched. 40 pipe (2.88 external, 2.47 internal) and 2 1/8th inch wide. Hope this helps.

with regard to the idler pulley bolts, are they centered on the angle iron or off center. I have watched the video several times and you do not say or I missed it. thank you

Patrick Smith look at the video starting at 3:30. That explains the bolt placement relative to the face of the platen. I figure that each person may have a different diameter of idler pulley depending upon what they use for the pulley itself. the main thing is that the pulleys can run free with the platen flat on a table. I hope this answers your question.

No problem...ask away. I'm not sure I have ever experienced anyone giving ID as a dimension for tubing material to describe the profile. Typically it's always OD. The platen face can be 2in, but the "2in by 72in" describes the belt, not the machinery. For instance if you have a 6 inch vertical belt sander, the platen may very well be 6.5 wide. There isn't any reason you couldn't make it 2in wide, it's just what I had. Good luck on your build.

I'm sorry for all the questions its just some people measure inside and some outside when you say 1.5" square tube is that from the outside or the inside? I have watched all 7 Vids many times and thank you for posting, the reason for the platen face question is because it is a 2x72 inch grinder yet the platen face is .5 larger then the belt, thanks for all your help this is all I need to know.

The tensioning pulleys that I got from a mechanic measure 2.375" and the 2.5 schedule 40 is larger than the pulley. Then you said that you used ideler pulleys that the timing belt runs on for the platen . Did you use the same size pipe? Then in the video you went on and said you used ideler pulleys for the tracking pullyey. I'm confused.

Hey Gary...great catch! I remeasured the pipe that I used for the pulleys and it's 2 1/2 inch Schedule 80, not Schedule 40. I made an annotation on the first video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmnWpJKGj6mKhpI) starting around 2:25 and gave you the credit for a good catch. Thanks!

Are you giving the ID or OD of the tube steel (square tube)?
@alaskabearhawk11 жыл бұрын
There are a total of seven videos on this belt grinder. Two are: "2" by 72" Homemade Belt Grinder" and "2" by 72" Homemade Belt Grinder Part II". They give the general overview. The remaining five: "2" by 72" Homemade Belt Grinder Construction Part 1/2/3/4/5" should give all the dimensions of the steel used in the grinder, step by step. If there is something that is missing that you need to know, tell me and I'll get a measurement for you. Thanks for your interest!

Why is the platen arm 13 and 3/4" inches long?
@alaskabearhawk5 жыл бұрын
Mike Gunnells Ministries Inc Probably the size of the piece I had. No magic behind the 12 3/4 inch length. The geometry works out just right and the belt tension is perfect.
@mikegunnellsministriesinc53845 жыл бұрын
@@alaskabearhawk Could it be shorter is the reason for me asking
@alaskabearhawk5 жыл бұрын
Mike Gunnells Ministries Inc I suppose it could be. It would affect the belt tension a bit moving the upper Guide pulley down. You could change the tension on the spring or lengthen the tensioner if it becomes a problem. I wouldn’t shorten the platen length. It it about perfect in length for what I use it for, straightening the edge of a longer piece of steel.

@@alaskabearhawk I'm not talking about the platen itself I am talking about the arm that holds the platen that slides into the main body of grinder do you ever slide it out that far to be using 13 and 3/4"
@alaskabearhawk5 жыл бұрын
@@mikegunnellsministriesinc5384 Ahhhh...gotcha. No, I never slide it out that far. The main reason it's so long is to eliminate as much radial, or side-to-side, up/down play that I can for the rest that slides into it. I had to add the plates for a tighter fit and the length helps take care of the rest. To me the ability to put in the rest and have it exactly 90 degrees to the belt without fiddling with it is worth a lot. It's almost like a poor man's Bridgeport. Many of my parts need to be accurate. Even if they don't have to be exact, having things straight and true make fab work easier and the result much more professional-looking...especially when you paint them.

Take a look at the very first video I made about the grinder titled: "2" by 72" Homemade Belt Grinder", 5:20 long. Starting at 2:04, I describe how the wheels are made. I used timing belt bearings from a 2.5L Subaru engine. Hope this helps...
