Hi Matt, so glad that you were able to give Steve and Tess a hand with their cabin. I really like those two. The question about whether they are offgrid or not. I was born in Alaska 76 years ago and back before this offgrid term was developed by modern day homesteaders, it was you either lived remote or you lived on the road system. That was that. If they don't put a driveway in they will remain remote. Myself, Steve and Tess have something in Common, I worked as a Winter caretaker for remote fishing lodges for 30 some years and I am anxious to hear their stories and watch their videos. By the way, Dick Proenneke was a friend of mine when I lived and worked out on Lake Clark.

Grid means electric grid. Off-grid means you are not connected to the electric grid. There is nothing more too it.

Most people insulating the floor aren't in Alaska, so they don't mind putting in narrow boards on the inside/bottom of the floor joists, and setting plywood strips on those. It takes longer, but it keeps you off your back... But up there, you gotta insulate as best you can, so crawling underneath the thing is necessary at some point. It's cool that you did it now, when you can still lift the floor up. That way there are no gaps or cuts in the plywood. It's also worth remarking that some people prefer to use RockWool (or equivalent) in floors, especially in off-grid locations, first because sometimes water spills on the floor and soaks down into it, and second because the mice don't like it. But it costs a little more. Something to consider, depending on your goals.

1/4" grid hardware cloth against the bottom of the subfloor stops mice and voles1" or 1/2" bellow that to deter the skunks and Porqupines.

Something that small, I probably would have flipped the sub floor. But what you guys did worked fine, just a little awkward attaching underneath.

Good vid and music Matt. Teamwork sure helps one heck of a lot. Like you I would really appreciate a few more hands at times. Tough being a one man shoe. The cabin looks great. True plumb and square. The walls bowing out won't hurt. Diagonal center braces would help that. The bottom floor joist cover for the insulation. Not a bad job on it. Fast and it's sealed up as good as any other method. Seen it done a lot of ways some much more labor and costly. This build will be good experience for them later on. One thing they will have an efficient home come winter. I'll check out their channel. We met them before. Next time

My wife and I live in a very mountainous area of north central Washington state, 5 miles from a small town and 30 miles from a small city. We’ll be going to north west MT the end of May to look at property to buy and build a log house so that after my wife retires our house will be finished. We’ll sell our mountain home here in WA for our retirement home. I figure between eating fish, elk, deer and other wildlife we’ll be ok for our meat. We will have to grow our vegetables because the area we’re interested in, the closest Costco is 100 miles away. We will have to drill a well and install a septic system, but we have 12 years to do it all.
