The second installment in this documentary series on the Netsilik Inuit shows a hunter's attempt to harpoon a seal. The hunter moves too soon and misses his catch. He prepares for a night vigil at the seal's breathing hole.

My mother taught in Nome in 1946. She recalls a school assembly where the kids watched the hunters butcher a seal. They wrapped up choice parts for kids to take to their grandparents. I taught school for 34 years and we never had an assembly like that. She revisited Nome in her 80s and the people were overjoyed that she had photos from those times. She left them with community. They were delighted to see pictures of elders they had never met, only heard about.

Wonderful story. We taught butchering, processing, and canning back in the 40's in public schools. I taught vocational agriculture during the 70's in one on those old bldgs along the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. I'm headed to Nome Sunday for my 8th time. I eat at the Senior Center in Nome and love the stories told by the old people. Going to fish the Coho run in the Nome, Snake, Penny, and Cripple rivers. I'm amazed by the life of Native people. Nome is home to some of the most interesting people I have ever met. This will be my last trip up there. I'm 74. I hope you have written your mother's story down. And your story as well. I'm not quite innocent, and picked up few flaws I learned from the western culture, been to D.C. Man, am I ever happy, i MADE IT BACK NORTH to the Arctic an live like its suppose to be lived innocent and without malice! I became a subsistence hunter, college degree in political science I used as tissue a long time ago now! I'm happier!

Some of them are still around. My great grandmother still lives in Iqualuit and she's 103 years old. She's even a WW2 veteran. Inuit can live for a very long time, 90 years old is typical

On behalf on being a Inuk myself, thanks for the comments. We try to keep the culture alive. People still hunt and people still sew and people still make these stuff as well but only if we’re out on the land. I remember catching my first seal with my fishing nets, good times.

Amazing hunting skills to stalk SO CLOSE to that seal. Here we also were able to hear the hunter immitate the animal's sounds so as to further assuage it into relaxing. Very funny how the seals were looking at him for long moments, probably thinking: "Cousin Gilbert, we told you NOT to go eating all that pollock this year and stick to the Char. See how it has given you congestion!!" Haha!

I saw a video of the Inuit watching films of the real world, looked like New York. She watched with such awe. I just cannot imagine living in the arctic my entire life and have no idea Im part of this huge world where billions live, only to find out that I was sort of this lost ppl. If only we could see how their people got there from Asia. I suppose they were not aware of warmer climate in the south. I guess they broke off into small tribes as they migrated looking for food, others made their way farther into Canada and US. It’s just amazing to have this footage, yet still a deep sense of sadness bc many moved to the city and abandoned this way of life, but it is a gift to be a few Inuit on “Life Below Zero” and still living subsistence lifestyle. Vive the Hailstones and the Inuit ppl. ❤

Can we see how they constructed there tools, boats, sleds, did they have copper tools originally( before white man came )? Any videos of spring and fall trading camps? I see all mostly steel tools. Be nice to see the original ways. Thank you for the amazing videos. I am Alaskan Native and would love to see more of the knowledge that was purposely lost. Genocide was and is a real thing and still continues to happen. I hope one day the government confronts this dilemma as they have in Canada. Thank you again for the amazing videos. I'd imagine like other tribes were known to do. They would gather the undesirable pieces and put them in a tree far far from camp. Give the bears some food but out them way off your trail

@@Vercingetorix.Fantasia I might be wrong but Polar bear probably knew eskimos were fierce predators. Just like Lions don't mess with the massaii who only have spears. I've seen massaii killing a lion with only spears in the wide open without protection. Animals panic when they see us in group acting in coordination. They bewilder the lion. We see only a couple in this video, but if they lived in tribes i'm guessing armed with spears they can handle a polar bear. It's only when the polar bear surprises them that it might be too late. Again these people are not soft city people, they're master hunters.

I love this movie , one again later time I see this name is ittimanqnaq live in kugaaruk , my grandfather , one he knows me where I was and he said to my sitter when I was kid I was in cam4 for the dew line in 1974 but this guy in movie he ordere me to come over so we when they for three days this guy give me big hug and kiss and say to me my grandson , my father who was living in kugaaruk before he move for the dew line ,so today they pass way many years now

Just was wondering how long those truly warm clothes last? What do they do with the clothes when the children grow out of them and there are no other children born. I imagine the clothes must not smell all that great. Not trying to be disrespectful but how did they take care of hygiene, bathroom usage. Babies were kept naked, what did they do when babies do what babies do? They show so much respect for each other and their elderly. I hope they hold On to their culture, language as long as they can.

15:00 instead of this strategy, what if first he located the seals blowholes. Then put an ice cube, big enough to cover the blowhole just next to the hole. And tie a long string made of some animals skin to it. As soon as seal comes out, he could pull the rope to close to hole. Seal wont have any escape route.
