Top questions and answers: 1. Do you own the land: Yes. 2. Where is this at? Remote UP of Michigan. 3. Where can I buy this kit? Not a kit- all supplies were purchased at Menards. We use 1-1/4" well pipe. Make sure it's for wells. (Usually stamped on it.) 4. How does the water get in the pipe? The well point pipe is a screen- micro holes in it. 5. Shouldn't you get the water tested? We've never tested our remote wells. The water is coming straight from the aquifer and filtered by sand. Period. We've never been sick. EVER. It's how we do it. You may choose to do it another way. 6. Why is the river water so brown? Tannins. 7. Why did you use river water to soak and prime the pump instead of clean, bottled water? It's what I had. Then ran 60-70 gallons through it. No worries. 8. How do you winterize the pump? Let the prime out. 9. Why not use a fence post driver? Too light in my opinion- pound yourself to death with little progress. We have also used a homemade well pounder that is about 70 lbs- very effective but very heavy and awkward for one person my size to use (see video links above to hubby's videos). As you can see, the sledge worked just fine in that sandy soil. It's an 8 lb woman-powered sledge. Go beat that pipe- getcha some water girl! LOL Feels good. 10. How did you know where the water would be? I could see the water table..... the river's right there. 11. How come it's so far from the cabin? It's only about 25 ft- right near the wood pile. 12. I didn't know putting in a well was so easy!! It's not.... usually. This is an extreme example of great location and soils. Trust me, it usually doesn't go this easy! A hand pump will only lift water about 25 ft. max- so if you've got good, easy soil (sandy) and hit water within 25 ft. you're golden!

Very inspirational video. It just goes to show that with a little passion, compassion, dedication, effort, hard work, the human can do anything. I found your channel a month and a half ago and subscribed and enabled notifications since then. I have watched your videos with the purpose of seeking inspiration. I live in NY, probably one of the worst run states in America. It is difficult to find work because every employer is asking workers to be vaccinated. I don’t want to get political, so I will cut to the chase. I was tested positive for COVID-19 and I was completely bummed out. I was thinking to myself, great… more adversity. I had already lost my grandmother (Non Covid) this year. The one good thing about New York is that there are more hiking trails in the Hudson Valley area that you can shake a stick at. I decided to trek the Breakneck Ridge/Breakneck Bypass, one of the toughest and challenging hikes in the lower Hudson Valley Area. The hiker climbs 1,250 feet in only 3/4 of a mile. I questioned what I was getting myself into at the beginning especially at the first rock scramble. I kept on saying to myself… One more rock scramble, one more rock scramble. There were four total rock scrambles each extremely different. A few scrambles had directional signs pointing “EZ” and “HARD”. I always opted for the “HARD” because life is not easy. Yes, I was awarded with breathtaking and beautiful views of the Hudson Highlands, but my main focus was moving forward and completing the hike. I ended up completing the hike in 2 hours and 51 minutes. This hike is designed to be completed in 3 hours. When I was finished, I realized I could have done more. That there is the innate driven quality of a human. It is something we all have. We just have to find it and release it. Girl in the Woods, thank you again for all of your inspiring videos. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. I look forward to your new videos soon.

Great job! I have one suggestion for you, and I apologize if someone else might have already commented similarly. I'd suggest digging a 2-ft deep and 4-ft diameter hole at the top of your well riser pipe. Then fill it with either neat cement of a mixture of cement and bentonite to create a surface seal for the well. This would prevent surface contamination from inflating down to the screened section of your well. Worst case would be a dog or other wildlife peeing or pooping near the well. Then while the cement is still wet, lay several flat rocks on top of it around the well so that you don't have to stand in mud when you fetch water from your well. Enjoy!

As a master Constuction pipe fitter, I worked for DuPont for 32 years, here's what I can tell you. Pipe dope is a lubricant, not a sealer. As a lubricant it allows you to screw pieces together to the maximum, that's what bonds the pipe together. Also, use pipe tape, it does the same thing, is less messy, and is easier to carry around, put it in your back pocket.
@Mrfkarl2 жыл бұрын
Facilities maintenance engineer here, we use tape AND dope on anything we might want to get apart later on. (Steam lines). They call it sealant but it’s not. It’s a lubricant like this person says. Great project!

There are different kinds of pipe tape for different materials and applications. I grabbed wrong kind before and found out chatting with sales person about what I was working on. Container looks similar I just seen it and didn't read it.
@bobprins2324 Жыл бұрын
So Mr. Dupont, why would manufacturers put additives in the dope to help SEAL gaps between the threads ??? Why not just use grease or other lubs ???? Did you really work for Dupont ?? I started into plumbing in 1970, just retiring now. I've used teflon dope, permatex a black sticky substance that does get hard. They ALL have some type of additive to SEAL the gap in the threads a LUB at the same time. Teflon tape would be the only choice for PVC, CPVC and other plastics. The chemicals in pipe dope will break down the plastic in time. Young lady, that shallow well may be OK in the wilderness/God's country, most places in civilization don't allow a well less than 25' of pipe plus the point and most require a casted well outdoors and piped into the home and a licence and permits are required. So Mr. Handyman check what's legal and safe before you start, your health may depend on it. Also, young lady, if you put one wrench on the ground and put your weight on the top wrench you'd get the joints tight enough. Driving with a 70+lb. Well driver would loosen the joints and you'd have trouble loosing prime. There's a lot more to having a safe working well than you show in a short video !

KLT. That is amazing. I grew up, I am 73, with almost that exact pump. We were on the Eastern shore of Maryland and our well was, wait for it, 540 feet. Originally it was artesian, which means that the water would have flowed from it on its own, but when I was growing up it was a few feet down. The water was amazing. It originated in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Eventually the water table dropped. Under ideal conditions you can only draw water 33 feet. You can push it however as far you want, but you can only draw it, or pull it, only so far. Realistically, half that. Eventually, we had to install what was called a Venturi pump. But the water was amazing. As pure and fresh as any water, I believe, has ever been. Good job on the video. Inspiring really, and it was good to reminisce.

My sand point is down approximately 45 feet. You can't beat sand filtered water. My water has almost no taste and in the winter time it is so cold it will give you a brain freeze....lol...if you guzzle it down. I also have a cribbed well about 150 feet from my trailer and when you lift the cover off you can see water going by. The mine out here wanted to do some blasting in our area and most of us refused to let them on our lands for fear they would destroy the water supply out where we live. Here's some easy life saving advice that my parents gave me growing up... if you have a basement or storage you can save up water in old juice, or milk jugs or any jug you can. My parents would do this growing up and store the jugs in the basement. When there were power outages in the winter we just grabbed the jugs from the basement and used them for flushing the toilet, washing, whatever. This was before generators were as affordable. But still you wouldn't want to be running your generator wasting gas just to flush your toilet or brush your teeth unless you actually had to
@offairhead2 жыл бұрын
@@jhtsurvival did you have a well with electric pump? Even when my power is out my water works just fine so your statement seems foreign to me.
@cheribeldin3588 Жыл бұрын
@@offairhead I have a water well, but the pump is electric. When my electric power goes out I lose water too. So yes, losing water during a power outage is a thing. I also store water in jugs as a backup, and whenever I anticipate losing power (such as when a storm is coming) I catch additional water in bathtub, sinks, pans, etc. Doing this is usually a waste of time, but it has been a real life saver a few times.

Hello, when using the pipe wrenches if you reverse the way you had them so its positioned to push against the ground leaving you with both arms on the other wrench to apply maximum torque. Nice set up. looks like paradise. I finally purchased 1 acre in a very remote location. Cant wait to put my well in! The world needs more people like us. God bless you all!

I don't understand having the pipe wrench, against the ground ? when the wrench is positioned horizontally on her work.. ... If she would have hammered a rod or pipe 6 inches from her well into the ground several feet and protruding upwards a few feet, That Rod would be the wrench stop she could use to man handle the other with both hand.

Just found your channel last night. ❤️ Growing up we had a huge A-frame, we got our water from the hills. Dad built a pump house. You are lucky to have good flowing water. My dad bought property with multiple springs flowing into a river about 30 years ago. After he found a good flowing area he removed the gravel down to 8 feet with a back hoe and placed a large concrete pipe vertically with slab, access door and steel ladder. There was always water flowing into the pipe. He had the added benefit of being able to place this cistern on bedrock. After that he placed an electric water pump and ran plumbing to the house.

Back in the days when drinking water wasn't a health issue & buying bottled water meant you had a cooler, i was in my twenties & living in 'the country'. When my 'city' friends would visit i'd make them drink the water from my artesian well. Some were tough guys & never drank just water, but by the end of the weekend they did voluntarily. All my friends increased their water consumption whenever they stayed with me. It was that good. I miss that house, it was the only place i was able to keep plants alive. Oh yeah, BTW, great video, good demonstration. Will be checking out more of your content as this is my first look.

Hey Girl, You should go down a couple more sticks at least, because water tables can move up or down 25 feet or more, every month. Also, for now, dump water near the pump handle to soften the soil, so you can push down farther. Any dirt you dig out around the pipe path is a natural water bucket. Fill it with water so you can push deeper. After a rainstorm try and push the point down deeper. Finally, adding a plank of wood at the top of the well cap will allow you to stack wood or rocks on top. Then gravity will assist it lowering the sand point deeper.

is it a danger that water is already at 6 feet level below ground? not sure but seems risky for a sinkhole developing or something.
