Alaskan Malamute Guard Dogs! Angry Side Of Phil

Hey! So Here's some footage of our Alaskan malamute guard dogs. Teddy is not sure what's going on yet with all the barking but he will soon learn. We have allowed this and rewarded the behaviour as although first and foremost they are our pets, they are also a great deterrent of would be thieves! There is crime everywhere and if you see this dogs at the gate your unlikely to want to test them haha. Yes that is our regular DPD driver (they cover areas) even though he is delivering them food haha they are still on guard duty! Just listen to Phil's deep barks, he's pretty scary when he wants to be, Niko likes to follow suit. As we said, we only leave them out the front unattended if say the van is open or Shane is working on something with tools out there or from the days when he used to clean his motorbike out the front. There is also a beware of dog sign as although they have squishy friendly looking faces, they can get quite agitated by strangers approaching their territory!
If you ever watched the Derek video where they protect the garden from him you'll know! Once we invite people in they are fine but only if we allow them in and tell them it's ok. All in, it's a pretty good trait to have as they are pack oriented they are property defensive too. Catch them on the park 200m away and they are your best friend!

I have a passion for dog psychology. Your two dogs work in harmony. Phil is protective against human intruders and Niko is protective against intruder dogs. You can see when a new dog comes near, Phil is not initially reactive against them, but Niko is, which triggers Phil. And Niko is chill when there's a new human nearby, while Phil gets bonkers. They are a perfect couple.

We had the same issue with our big German Sheppard when we were growing up! Phil’s just ‘protecting’ you from any strangers! Our dog used to scare the death out of delivery guys, so we used to keep him in the back garden away from the front gate. One thing though, we were never EVER robbed!! Stay Safe! Kirstey xx

Actually, that's a good thing. Ideally they shouldn't be like that when you are present and having a normal interaction. They're smart enough to figure out when you need their help. It seems to me that what's going on here is that Phil feels that no one is in control of the situation so he better step up.

I used to take care of malamutes in northern Alaska. They are more territorial towards animals than people. You can train them not to bark that way. Every time i would run into one if those guys barking sounding all mean, i would talk to them calmly and put my hand out. Never failed. I took care of 27 of them as a 13 year old. The village I was in had wwll over 150 dogs. From malamutes to alaska sked dogs and mixes. Some of them were just massive. Barking is a way to let others know they are there. I moved to washington State and i had a french mastiff named Barney. 175 pounds and he wouldn't bark, but would charge the fence with his head down, scaring the crap out of everyone. Lol. He was a watcher and would make these little puffs of noise. And just watch. Scared off a ton of business people. Haha.

Delivery Truck arrives. Phil: Danger another person is out there (Bark, growl) Niko: I will sit right here quietly, I see him; he needs to leave. Phil: (Bark and Growl). Delivery driver then attempts reach over brick to hand package to Dad. Phil (Volume setting +1): (Bark, growl). Niko: OMG. WTF. Did reach over to the Brick, I will climb over this wall and eat his hand (Bark Volume: +10, Terrible: +1, Speed x2), let me at him. Teddy: Oh new package, it has to be toy or food for me. Even the Delivery person luvs me. 2nd package is handed over. Niko: Dad let me at him (Bark, jump, tries to keep body between Dad and Delivery Person. Phil: (Bark Growl): I will eat you puny hooman. Niko: Me too. I cannot stand this guy. we are not playing (Bark: Speed +3) Teddy: Oh boy. another toy or food for me. PHIL: (+2 volume Bark, Growl). NIKO: you would not like us when we are angry (Bark: Speed +2, Terrible +1). Teddy: (runs over to mommy): I am scared, I am not sure what is happening. Meanwhile: Milo (stares from window, sitting on the window sill). Mia: What is that noise. Milo: Delivery time. Mia: Oh, I am going back to my nap. Milo: {thinking to him self. I cannot wait to boop Phil in the head again. See Teddy...do you see, you need to learn to protect. My cousin species 5 times removed: is a Lion...do you see Teddy and learn}. {Oh, I got a piece of dust on my fur, must clean one self.}

My Shepherd does this. We've had to add another 3 ft to our 6ft fence to stop him getting to people walking past. However he calms down the second we start chatting to them, except the postman, he really hates him lol. It stems from when the house was broken into when he was a puppy and the burglars kicking and hitting our late Collie and scaring me senseless. I'm a forces wife and was home alone with two very young children as my husband was on deployment. Luckily my Collie did enough to chase them off but they did hurt her. She was bruised and had a bloody mouth and cut eye. My Shepherd is now so big and protective that anyone breaking in is not getting back out, so while some may see Phil and Nikos behaviour as too much, trust me, in today's times, it is reassuring to know this lovely family has this added level of protection.
