One of the many things I appreciate about you Greg is making the most out of any situation. I look forward to seeing the experience of your life going into the planning of your 4 place Super Cub. Take care brother!

I was stationed on an aircraft carrier from '77-'80 (Ranger cv 61). This reminds me of one westpac. We had #9 seas and a full airwing which means all the planes won't fit on the hangar deck and have to be chained down on the flight deck. With 10 or more tiedowns on each padeye (think chain instead of fabric) we still lost jets from waves breaking over the bow in excess of 20ft and washing them overboard.

I had a similar experience, Greg, on my final PPL solo cross-country test flight, taking off from a grass saddleback strip at Compton Abbas, Dorset, UK, in a Cessna 152. A strong gust from the starboard lifted the wing, tipping me over about 60° just after lift off. Being on a steep hill, all I could do was dramatically turn hard to port and dive down the hill, fortunately levelling and able to climb away. Scary moments!

Those things that we survive hopefully make us better pilots down the road.

If that isn't the best way to tie down in the field i don't know what would be. I enjoyed seeing the story of how you got the parts out...the wing under that Super Cub...awesome.

I'm surprised that no one has yet to whine about "littering" by leaving the anchors in the ground.
@mauleguy2 жыл бұрын
Probably just a matter of time. I only mark mine with natural things such as a small stack of rocks so I can find them again.

Didn’t even know you replied to me until now. Cool.

Thanks posting. Will be ordering some duckbills soon. “Bi-wing super cub”, LOL.

It kind of makes sense to me to anchor a plane with the tail into the wind, although I'm not a flyer and never really thought about it much. Duckbill anchors seem like a real bargain.

Thanks for sharing Greg. I often wonder how many future accidents we prevent by sharing stories like these. Cheers

Thanks Greg. I see a bucket of duckbill anchors in my near future.

Is this considered a controlled flight into terrain? Even though you lost control?

Bummer, thanks for sharing.

Experience is the hardest teacher. You get the test before the lesson.

Some hard lessons learnt there. Points taken. Thanks for sharing your story Greg. Must have been tough working out there alone to strip that all off.

I had a couple days that I felt sorry for myself before I was able to get back out because the winds would not lay down. I was not much fun to be around at that point I am guessing. I had accepted the fact that Bushwacker was coming home in a container . The final disassembly I had help and it was much appreciated.

Thanks for the great story and pictures. You had posted about this incident before so I figured you would not mind my mentioning it in the Webinar. The winds in that part of the state can be a real challenge. My wife and I went out to see friends at a cabin for the weekend and ended up staying on the ground for 4 days!! All the want to be bush pilots need to pay attention to the knowledge Greg is passing on!! Any pilot can bend a plane, A great pilot will do his/her best to educate others on how not to make the same mistake THANKS DENNY

Yes share my story anytime. I have learned a lot from others and if I can save someone an airplane I am willing to be that guy... Thanks Denny,

Do you carry a big hammer just for the anchors? Thanks for sharing!
@mauleguy2 жыл бұрын
I carry a nice Gerber axe that is big enough to chop through a tree or drive the duckbills
