Alastair is more of an introvert than Zach, and this is the most I have ever heard him say before! He looks so relaxed and comfortable here, and I think he's found the perfect partner in Zach. They fill in the blanks for one another, and that is great. Hello, too, to B - the world's cutest dog.

Zach, that is one brave, amazing dude you married there. I’m sure this was more than a little outside of Alastair’s comfort zone, but him doing it anyway to share with us and help others is not only moving, but really an example to all of us. Thanks for the video guys! I actually have someone important to share this with.

Alastair, first of all I love that name...now, I’ve commented on so many of Zach’s videos and I truely care about you two and your relationship. You two have been such an inspiration for me to come out and be myself. Thank you so much for that. I had forgotten what Happy felt like, but now I’m just me. Seriously thank you

Thank you so much Alastair and Zach. Alastair this was such an honest, heartfelt (yet humorous at times) coming out story. Guys this is very helpful for anyone struggling with coming out, especially in Australia at present as we are in the middle of a very dangerous stupid vote on whether same sex couples should get married. This is making a lot of gay people struggle with thoughts self hatred, and worse. Your closing statements were right on the point. Thanks for taking the time and sharing this.

Alastair! You are the greatest! One of the most sincere, funny, and no drama coming out stories that I have ever heard in KZbin. The story about the letter to your mother, with the Q&A section, should be on a manual of how to come out for dummies; the comments about the email to your grandfather were just the cherry on top. If I could give you starts (and not just a single "like"), I would give you 5 (i.e., all of them). Very proud of having you representing the gay community on line.

The great strength of this channel and others like it (Matt and Blue, Mark and Ethan, Carson and Nate, Zach and Evan, the Monasteros, Dads not Daddies, PK and Mike, Mike Rizzi and Chris--the list, happily, seems endless) occurs when the guys are just themselves in front of us, when they seem as real as water. Zach's interruptions today were a great example of that. That touch of the unpracticed made whatever Alastair had to say even more approachable, identifiable. Sure, all the guys mentioned above exhibit their 'creative' sides occasionally, and certainly they're all more 'youtube-genic' than most of us in the audience. But they're most effective when they're most themselves. Alastair's message--first, come out to yourself--has been said in videos over and over again. And it's irrefutably true. But when he says it as he did in this video, it matters most to people who need to hear it because he's clearly not setting himself up as anything other than who he is--just a guy, trying to live his authentic life. His achievement (graduating West Point, serving in the military) and his good fortune (finding Zach and committing to a life journey together) fall away when he's just telling his story. He could be anyone, even when he's most specifically himself. And that is so important. I love these guys and their peers for what they contribute to the community in their willingness just to 'be' in front of of us.

Wow. That was a very sweet and thoughtful video. As a guy in my 40s who grew up at a time pre-Internet in a rural area, we didn't have any way to explore what being gay meant. We only had the negative stereotypes as seen on TV. It's great that you guys are making these videos about just living your lives. Thank God there is the Internet where young LGBTQ kids can go and find videos like this. Perhaps your videos have helped to save some young kid's life somewhere who sees no hope for a better future. Having grown up in the country myself (Go Vols!), It's really refreshing to see a couple of guys being themselves away from the heart of the gayborhoods and out in middle America. (You're braver than I.)

"You need to be okay with yourself before taking criticism of others" Thank you Alastair for yours words. You may be way younger than I am but you sure are wiser as it took me a hell lot of more than 24 years to figure this out (if only, it would've saved me a lot of stress, pain and sorrow). It sure does take strength and courage to come out and you have done it perfectly and with dignity. I wish you all the best to you and Zach.

Great video guys. One thing I'd like to say to those who are struggling with coming out is that your life, your happiness does not depend on someone else's acceptance. You exist whether they approve or not. You are not an offering to be accepted or rejected. You are your own person, on your own path. There is only one person who's acceptance matters and that is you. Once you have acceptance in your heart for yourself it makes it so much easier for those around you to accept you and if they don't they don't! They really don't have a say. Be kind, be respectful and give them the gift of accepting them for who they are. But be gone if it is a negative situation. Of course this one man's take and it doesn't apply to those who are in a dependant situation where their emotional and physical safety is a concern.

I want to thank you both for being so inspirational to me. I live in a very traditional environment in England and I was forbidden thirty years ago by my army officer parents to ‘come out’ as it was, and still is to them, totally unacceptable to do so. I’m in my fifties now and have led a very lonely and loveless life but your wonderful story brings me joy and I am so very happy for you both. God bless you and keep you always.

I came out in early 70s and helped paved the way for some of the life your experiencing as a gay man, by my own actions in the LGBT community. Very well done, Alistair! Thank you for sharing that. I only used a letter to come out to someone once. I'm sure he got it, but I never did hear from him. Everyone else has found out one-on-one. Both of my parents never knew while they were alive. I always believed my mom would have had a much easier time accepting it. My brother and sisters still love me. Anyway, I admire your courage. You and Zach were definitely made for each other, and you guys are blessed with loving and accepting families. Best wishes always!🌈

As you said, brother: part of coming out is coming out to yourself. It took me so long to do that. I remember telling myself that when I was 14 years old, one night, alone in bed as I was getting sleepy But the reality of it actually happened when I was in college and I met and fell in love with my first boyfriend. It's a hard thing to do when you come from a place I came from. But when you do come Out, finally (when it's right for you), then all the stress, the fears, the horror, the shame fades away and you can be yourself. Thank you for your story :)

Great coming out video, Alstair! I think the letter thing is a great idea and one I've heard others use. But I also thought anticipating any possible questions and writing the answers to them really is an effective way of immediately putting whoever reads it at ease. That was brilliant! I have to say that when you were first introduced on this channel, I looked at you as being Zach's boyfriend. But I think we've all come to love you as so much more and embrace you. I can certainly see why Zach is so in love.

Congrats, Alastair. I came out to my mom by letter. Unfortunately, my situation didn't go the same way. It took weeks to get in touch with my mom and her response was an effective disowning. Her most important line was, "The only reason you're not disowned is because I can't come up with a lie big enough to tell the family why you're not allowed around anymore." That was over 20 years ago. Her attitude hasn't changed. She never showed my dad the letter. She was so furious with it, she ripped it up, put it in the trash, AND took the trash bag to the community dumpster. He died without ever knowing.

Good to hear that your family was accepting. My family was not religious and it took them awhile, but coming out at 18 in 1986 (in rural Colorado) was a bit different than today. It does make me sad that you had to go through the guilt and anguish that religion can inflict (eventhough I was not religious- I still felt it was sinful when I first realized I was gay- 14 or so). You guys remind me of the relationship from the documentary, "Bridegroom"(you could tell how much these two really loved each other)- only your familes are accepting. (If you have not seen "Bridegroom"- I am truly describing your relationship. You two have SOME parallels to them- just not the story itself).

When my son, who was almost finished with college called us for a family meeting and it was at a public place (so I would have to control myself) I sort of knew he was going to enlist but honestly hoped he was gay instead. Petrified of my son being a Soldier. Your Mama is the strongest of the strong. My only worry with being gay (he isn't) would be how he was treated and being free to love and enjoy all of the freedoms his Dad and I had. Your Mama has that worry and being the parent of a Soldier. She is amazing. Interview her, please. How she copes as an ARMY Mom, because this Sapper's Mama is petrified.
