I owned an Alberg 37 Yawl for 7 years, traveling from Chesapeake to Florida to PR . One thing never said , the tanks can removed and replaced without cutting up the cabin sole . All interior panels are removable giving access to chain plates and wiring and plumbing . This saves big bucks in maintenance . And never worry about the keel falling off . With 6 foot draft , you must keep one eye on the depth sounder when in shoal water and she is already heavy so try not load her up any more than you must . I failed on that point . I think Alberg 37 is is one of the very best boats ever built and I recommend her .

This is also my first and likely last sailboat. A 1981. It is moored in Parksville, BC. I was never interested in any other design for the reasons you mention. I'm planning to sail it to Mexico when I feel confident enough.😊

Congratulations! You have purchased an amazing boat that can take you anywhere you want. If she’s a 1981, she’s a MKII towards the end of the production run. One of the finest, and best they ever made. I strongly suggest you hold on to her, if you can. She will take you to Mexico 🇲🇽 , no problem. She might even take you much further, if you let her. Take good care of her skipper. She’s a really capable, and also beautiful boat. There are not many good ones of them around anymore. Fair winds. Cheers!

The mizzen stepped abaft of the rudder post maker her a Yawl. When the mizzen is stepped forward of the rudder post, then it is a ketch.
@SAILINGGOODOLDBOATS11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. You are absolutely correct about the placement of the mizzen. However, Alberg never made an Alberg 37 ketch. It was only available as, either a sloop or. Yawl. Happy sailing. Cheers!

I, also, owned an Albert 37. It was ketch rigged (option/custom.) Named "Gilmar" when when I bought her, renamed her "Pajara" (bird, female in Spanish.) I liked the ketch rig. It took away some of the cockpit space, but gave a nice point for mounting a table in port and was a good handhold for transiting to the cabin in rough water. She had her galley aft so was a Mark 2. But, had pilot berths port & starboard forward of the galley above the settees. I prefer this over the linear galley. She was a great boat, a good turn of speed with a smooth and predictable movement offshore. Sailed her in some fairly good winds (20-30+ knots) under working jib & jigger and she was solid and made way well. Albert never really made big innovations in designing sailboats, I think, he just designed solid designs that stood the teat of time.
@SAILINGGOODOLDBOATS3 жыл бұрын
Jaime, thank you much for your comment. I find the ketch rig option very interesting. I would imagine, very stable and fast. To have a second mast is also peace of mind in terms of redundancy, I think anyway. Sounds like you have sailed her in her most natural environment. Very impressive. Fair winds and always, at least one hand wide water under the keel. Cheers!
@jaimepowell50333 жыл бұрын
@@SAILINGGOODOLDBOATS She was the best of my bigger boats. (Cal 30, Tartan 27, Albert 30, then the 37.) She was also good under spinnaker & staysl off the mizzen. The mitten was great for getting her well balanced so the auto-pilot didn't have to work so hard. The ketch rig is the best up wind (she did well though.) But, get her on a broad reach with the big Genoa, full main, staysl, and mizzen all pulling , then she could rock & roll with easy ride of hers. She was a wonder offshore, always willing to tell me what her next move would be.

I have an Alberg 30 #202. It had sat on the hard for 13 years due to the owners poor health. I worked on it all last winter and sailed it this summer. I will work on it again all this winter as there is still much to be done. Performs best in winds 10 MPH plus and is not terribly quick and does not point very high. I would like to sail it to Bermuda and back sometime. I dream big.

I totally forgot I commented on this video 2 years ago, but now I can officially answer the question; she is absolutely phenomenal, I sailed her almost 45 miles last summer with jib + mizzen with only a spare spin sheet tied to the tiller, she almost doesn’t even need an autopilot.

Such a great video. Thanks for producing it. How would you compare the Alberg 37 to the Alden Fuji Ketch? I suspect that the Fuji is slower but maybe easier to learn on.
@SAILINGGOODOLDBOATS Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the very nice comment. I personally think that it might be easier to learn on a sloop rigged boat. Otherwise, I would seriously consider this boat. It’s a very stout, and capable passage maker. It’s been designed as a blue water cruiser from the first drawn line up. It might be a bit of a challenge though to find one that is still in good shape. I would definitely have it on my short list, as a serious passage maker. Fair winds. Cheers!

Great boats. How much did you buy her for? How much did you sell her for? And why'd you have to let her go?
@SAILINGGOODOLDBOATS Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. It’s been a long time ago. I think I paid $22,000.00, and sold her for about the same. I had to let her go back then, because I moved moved away for a job. The cost for bringing her along exceeded my budget. It’s a great boat though . If you can find one in good shape, I would recommend you go for it.

@@SAILINGGOODOLDBOATS Wow, thank you for the response. Yeah Im in love with these classic old boats and always gotta know what people paid for them. 20 grand is about what I expected. If you decided to subscribe to our channel, it would open up a lot more content for free. I’ll answer you anyway, though. My pleasure, really 🙂 Subscribing doesn’t cost you anything, and it helps us out big time to challenge the all mighty KZbin-algorithms. We had a few boats over the years, and framed them all on our channel. So, many cool boats to look at. Also, very different sailing areas. We are currently sailing a 1983 O‘Day 28 CB, on Lake Superior. Because, we are not doing this full time, we had to take a little production cut over the summer. We will be back, with more content though, during the winter. Stay tuned. Cheers!

I have been looking at Alberg 30s recently with plans to do the same as @patrickwentz8413. I would love a 37 if I could find one. Thorsten I have a question for you, what sailing experience did you have before you bought the 37? You say it was your first sailboat. Thanks
@SAILINGGOODOLDBOATS2 жыл бұрын
Hi James, I had literally zero sailing experience when I bought the A-37. she was my first sailboat, and although big for a first boat, also very forgiving. I had no regrets. A very stout sailboat that can take you anywhere you want, if equipped right. I think any Carl Alberg design would be an excellent choice really. You can’t go wrong with them, provided you find one in somewhat decent condition. Thanks for the comment. Good luck finding the right boat for you. I hope you found the episode about the A-37 helpful. Cheers!
