it's a common thing with classically trained musicians. It's not that they can't, but they're formal education doesn't encourage it. In many cases, it is discouraged and frowned on. In contrast, Jazz musicians are encouraged to explore self expression and do wild stuff. there are classical musicians that can improvise, but the majority will say "I don't" when asked to improvise.

@@LePetitBat it's simply that improvising in a classical style requires much more technicality than improvising in some other styles, so when a classical musician is asked to 'improvise', they will think in terms of their classical background. since classical musicians nowadays are mostly just performers, they are not necessarily trained to compose in that style. even so, there was a time when improvising in that style was regular, like in the Baroque and Classical periods. Bach's "Fantasias" are based on improvisations, if not direct copies of them with slight alterations. e.g. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpindmahodCgqrM there are still modern classical musicians who have maintained the art of classical composition, though, e.g. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4aUXp2Kgbx2m5Y

Is that so? Classical musicians are not very good at improvising? That explains a lot. My friends are so good at improvising and just having fun with their instruments that I always feel left out like I'm an inferior player, like my musical sense is not very good...but I always somehow win violin competitions over them. This maybe explains it, my friends do like to play anime themes and whatnot very much while I am a full on classical musician. The only reason I'm even watching this video is because I saw Ray Chen's name.
@Sungha-im5df5 жыл бұрын
Noelic naturally because classical musicians practice faithfully with music sheets so its very technical and exact.
@pathaleyguitar97635 жыл бұрын
As a general rule, it goes that classical musicians can't improvise worth shit and jazz musician's can, or at least that's said. But frankly, most of what you hear from what sounds like "good improvisation" is not improvised. It's just someone memorizing modes and arpeggios and which chords to put them over, then regurgitating the same overused licks that have been used for the past 50 years. Of course, some people are legitimately improvising, but this is genuinely a very rare thing to do well.
@moonshade02275 жыл бұрын
Old master composers like Mozart sure could improvise. Thats what theme and variations style was for. For old concertos, soloists are supposed to improvise the cadenza.
@tronna15 жыл бұрын
The weird thing about classical music is that all those big composers and piano players improvised a lot like mozart, bach and beethoven etc, but for some reason improvisation aren't really a big thing in classical music today.

@@pathaleyguitar9763 I am obliged to disagree. You can't say that using your knowledge and piecing it together to make something new isn't improv just because it was already used or is widely known. Really enjoyable session. it does sound incredible that a touring classical violinist with years of training says he cannot improvise. I haven't dealt a lot with that level of musicians, but I've had someone who's taken lessons, sight reads music and plays piano really well tell me, "I can't improvise or play by ear, because to me, when I read the music I think of it as a key I press, not a musical note". My jaw sort of dropped because at that time I only played by ear and could just figure out chords and melodies of songs. I couldn't understand how a guy could play Beethoven and Chopin and not figure out stuff by ear. On the other hand, I think Ray can but perhaps because of exclusively classical training 1) he has almost never been asked to improvise and never practiced it and 2) being used to playing the most excellent music ever composed perfectly he thinks whatever he improvises is comparatively so crappy that he says he can't. Anyway, it's an interesting phenomenon.
@alpang61614 жыл бұрын
Ray was probably very much genuine about not knowing how to improvise but when you're so naturally talented as a musician, it comes extremely naturally. More so than they usually expect. Ik so many classically trained pianists and violinist afraid of improvising but after a little bit of trying, they're jamming out like Albert Lily and ray

@ivyssauro1235 жыл бұрын
Actually improvisation is a classical music lost art sadly, most baroque to late classical composers and performers knew how to improvise and some were really good at it. Of course in a different lenguage than what modern jazz and popular music improvisation works but they did nonetheless, the principles are the same, use the music vocabulary you already have to instinctively build a new composition that works, like a conversation. In the romantic period music became more composition focused than ever, but soloists were often asked to improvise, Cadenzas in concertos for instance are meant to be improvised with the material already displayed during the first movement, but even that eventually changed and as is nowdays, great players wrote down cadenza parts and those became famous and the standards, like Jascha Heifetz, Tchaikovsky's concerto cadenza, and no one improvises anymore RIP but as we can see im the video, you can't be deeply familiar with a musical vocabulary and be completely unable to improvise.

UžMě ToSere no, perfect pitch is a learned trait, but you can only learn it at a young age (think like 3-8). Other instruments are tempered so you can learn to recognize the sounds on them from great practice. Even though half the time Ray is just fooling around and being clueless when he plays it sounds so BEAUTIFUL. Wow. I can only dream of being that good.

I came here from two set introducing me to Ray Chen and then two months later I did my offline TV drama and now rewatching this from a new perspective.

In the beginning, Ray is reminding me of a strings student coming back after summer break after not practicing and is like remembering in the middle of a song.

Albert is actually a really good player for how cocky he is. The way he instantly switched gears to harmonizing the melody at 10:56 is an extraordinarily difficult skill to have

It’s been 5 months since I pulled out my violin, since I was forced to move somewhere where there isn’t orchestra (I hate that they don’t...) so I’ve been pretty sad and haven’t had the time to play since they only have band over here. But after watching this I suddenly got the urge to play and kind of have that spark back when I first started orchestra and my hands would literally shake because I was so excited to play but extremely nervous at the same time. Thanks guys.

Was told this by a good friend of mine : - How do you shut up a classical musician ? => You take away his music sheets. - How do you shut up a jazz musician ? => you give him some. Seems legit.

I love it when professional classical musicians play something not classical; I love seeing that skill and technique turned to something more casual. I'd love to see some more classical musicians join in on Irish traditional sessions.

Is it just me, or did Ray Chen literally do collabs to learn how to play KZbin, then gtfo and away from them? Ray was even asking questions about how to film videos on TwoSet's video. Feels like after Ray got started, let alone collab, he doesn't even mention them at all. I notice Twoset also doesn't talk about Ray anymore, even when they read a reddit meme/comment, they will not comment. On the other hand, they still cheerfully comment on very well on Hilary, Janine, and other pros. But when it comes to Ray, they try to pass it discreetly. I have tried to find a video of them mentioning each other, and I could not find any. Then we have the Ray breaking up with Sumina thing, and all this adding up just makes me wonder. But everyone is doing so well to not talk about anything that it's just a weird feeling. But I only feel off about Ray because he's the one who stopped contact with everyone. PS: Does anyone know how Ray Chen and Twoset collab began and how they met?
