What's more is that this song has a story people can relate to. The narrator goes to California with all the hopes and dreams of making it big mainly due to stories he has been led to believe. However, once he is there, he finds that California was not at all what he imagined. Hence, he leaves disappointed and disillusioned.

The California he's singing about really doesn't exist any more. I was there in 2008 and a few years back. California has fallen to corporate interests and there's not much left for the people out on the road chasing down a dream. Now it's one of the most tightly regulated areas in the US with very skewed economic opportunities. The scenery is still undeniably gorgeous.

When this song was popular and playing on Boston radio, I was a graduate student in a well known Cambridge, Massachusetts university. I was married, my wife and I had a little boy of about two years old. I was working part time (sometimes two jobs) and carrying a full academic program, and it was extremely difficult to make ends meet. Scholarships and loans did not cover personal living expenses. I had to pull out and accept the Master's degree with the anticipation of getting a full time job after graduation, stabilizing our financial situation, and returning for the doctorate. It never happened. I had to give priority to my family over my academic pursuits. The phrase in this song: "Will you tell the folks back home, I nearly made it?" always put a lump in my throat back then, and it still reminds me of a goal that I was not able to achieve.

What a beautiful song !!! Brings back sweet memories to my mind about the Golden State of California. Timeless and evergreen classic.
@mambi742 жыл бұрын
"Brings back sweet memories" -- really? did you read the lyrics past the chorus? It's not a 'happy song', far from it... "Out of self respect, I'm out of bread I'm underloved, I'm underfed I wanna go home" "Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it?... Please don't tell 'em how you found me Don't tell 'em how you found me Gimme a break"

@@mambi74 thanks for your comments. Sweet memories, I mean a time when I was a kid, where my father used to play this song. I am not referring to the lyric but the tune and nostalgia of the 60s 70s era.

@Matias_V , For many people including myself, the song brings back memories of hearing it when I was a kid and the music is happy sounding. However, I totally agree with you. When you listen to the lyrics, you find they are not happy at all. The narrator goes to California with high hopes and dreams of making it big only to find out it was not what he imagined. Therefore, he is homesick and wants to go home to his hometown.

Years ago, I graduated from the great University of Michigan. To celebrate, I decided to drive out to California from my home in Detroit. The first day, I reached St. Louis . I had never seen it rain so hard. I thought I wanted to go home. But, I continued on with my trip and it turned out to be maybe the best trip of my life.

It pours, man, it pours Out of work, I'm out of my head Out of self respect, I'm out of bread I'm underloved, I'm underfed I wanna go home It never rains in California But girl, don't they warn ya? It pours, man, it pours Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it? Had offers but don't know which one to take Please don't tell 'em how you found me Don't tell 'em how you found me Gimme a break, give me a break Seems it never rains in southern California Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before It never rains in California But girl, don't they warn ya? Is it me are there a lot of people that don’t really get the real message of the song ? It has nothing to do with the rain. He’s talking about the dream that California is a magical place of fame and fortune only to find out that for most it’ll always be a dream and not reality.
