Saw Albert Lee and Ry Cooder with Eric Clapton in 1983. The Money and Cigarettes tour. The solos these three traded we're really amazing. Clapton's blues solos we're the best I've heard. He did a long slow melodic sole before Wonderful Tonight that may have been the most beautiful solo ever. However, Albert Lee was simply the best of the three far and away. His soloing took elements of Ry and Erics' ideas and just left the planet. Imagine every great lead guitar player on every killer solo you have ever heard. All the tones, all the melodic ideas, all the arpeggios, all the sustain, staccato, legato, chordal extensions, double stops, bending, keys, modes, inversions, use of triplets, effects, styles, I mean absolutely everything on all the different EC music, used, not over used, perfectly between Ry Cooder and Eric's amazing guitar playing and you get the picture. Albert Lee is by far the most under the radar master of any thing lead and rhythm electric guitar.

Saw Albert with heads hands and feet at the Rex Hotel Whitley Bay, then at the Mayfair in Newcastle. The band had a VW camper van in their fleet. Also saw him at the Cellar Club in South Shields about 30 years later, a great player and nice guy!

In 1994, during one of the raging malibu wildfires, Albert's wife Karen asked me if I would load my truck with Albert's guitar collection and evacuate them. Albert was in europe, and the fire was getting dangerously close to their home. I had a 1 ton Chevy flatbed, and we loaded this amazing stack of cased guitars on my truck, encircling their neighbor's vintage stock Harley flathead 45, which I was also asked to evacuate. Too bad I didn't get pics. Fortunately, the widfire was stopped a ridge away from their home.

great update. i believe he used to play with ricky skaggs when ricky was young. So Albert must be getting up to around 43 or 44 years old now. Dude will live forever, never eats bad, never smoked a cig, never drinks alcohol like some in the Nashville music biz do like Keith Whitley & Carter Stanley.

My favorite guitarist. Albert was responsible for getting the Everly Brothers to reunite in 1983. The Gibson Les Paul "Black Beauty" is one of Keith Richards' favorites too. You can see him play it on "Paint It Black" on the Ed Sullivan show video from 1966.

I had the great privilege of seeing Albert Lee and 10 years after when I was a kid in highschool. I was astonished to see Lee while doing a solo rift in the middle of the concert change a string that had popped on his guitar so fast that he didn't even miss note of his solo. I was blown away. Never had seen anything like that before or since. From that moment on I knew that I had been in the presence of the greatest guitar player on earth. No one will ever be able to convince me otherwise.

@@saltek1a he's a great guy and has been on Nashville Now many many times with Ralph Emory, that's the show that is taped lived in front of an audience at the Grand Ole Opry Hotel & Casino. It's a great place to watch the harp player in the lobby mezzanine. They also have a great set of pools that are just unmatchable. You will also always see a country star there coming or going, it's unbelievable. By the way, he also appears on the Crook & Chase show.... No they are not married but are a cute couple doing a live show as well. And very popular show. Here is an excerpt of the show ---> kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGaznpxtitKiarM

What is 22 or 24 with regards to strings?
@keithbird89103 жыл бұрын
It's the gauge (thickness) of the string in 1000's of an inch. Hence. 22 = 22 thousandths of an inch.

any relation to Alvin Lee of Ten Years After fame , both guys are phenomenal guitar players from England ?

Doubt it. Alvin's real last name was Barnes. I agree they are both gifted players. FWIW, you can hear them both on Jerry Lee Lewis' "The Session" album. Lot of good stuff on there. Albert played on many of the tracks, Alvin on a handful.
