I knew Albert back in 1989/90 when his then Missus ran a pub, the Horn of Plenty, a stones throw from Mile End Underground station. And then later when they took over The Merry Fiddlers out in Dagenham, Essex. I just worked the bar. He was a quiet sort, never drank alcohol (took speed though) and always pleasant enough. You'd never guess his reputation by looking at him. I dont hink he mellowed, I think he just got older and wiser. RIP Albert.

Albert's was an evil man, men like him shouldn't be celebrated. But if you where just a normal fella going about your day he would leave you alone. For a man his size, what he lacked in size, he made up with heart and ferocity, like he said, he were'nt proud of the acid incident, but sometimes, a dig ain't sufficient. Violence is lasting and sends a warning to others, who may have their eye on you, it's good publicity in that world, it would make you think twice before wanting a bit of Albert. My ex father-in-law was in jail with Albert in Gartree in the 70's . When he recounted jail house stories about Albert he had a nervous laugh . He was no mug himself . Albert Reading was the real deal .

Albert chinned all the dogs in my neighbourhood with one punch, they were all Yorkshire Terriers to be fair but they can be very dangerous in sufficient numbers. Once saw him bite a Chihuahuas ears off just for glancing at him the wrong way. To the end of his days, Albert was on the run from the RSPCA.
