In a move that stunned everyone, Alberta's government has decided to put a six-month pause on new renewable energy project permits in the province.
The United Conservative government called for the province's utilities regulator to hold an inquiry into wind and solar energy plant developments, asking the Alberta Utilities Commission to consider new rules such as mandatory reclamation security requirements, the impact of renewables on the province's electrical grid, and development on agricultural or environmental lands.
Critics say those factors are already considered, and that it comes at a questionable time, with the Canadian federal government and the U.S. government pushing towards a net-zero electricity grid in 12 years.
