In a move that stunned everyone, Alberta's government has decided to put a six-month pause on new renewable energy project permits in the province.
The United Conservative government called for the province's utilities regulator to hold an inquiry into wind and solar energy plant developments, asking the Alberta Utilities Commission to consider new rules such as mandatory reclamation security requirements, the impact of renewables on the province's electrical grid, and development on agricultural or environmental lands.
Critics say those factors are already considered, and that it comes at a questionable time, with the Canadian federal government and the U.S. government pushing towards a net-zero electricity grid in 12 years.

Notice the moratorium applies only to renewables, when all the concerns expressed, and more, can apply equally to fossil fuel generation plants.

@@rightwingcollectiveiqyou need to do the math on wind and solar projects. Companies ESG departments have cancelled many of these projects before they start. They waste resources and create no sustainable energy. They are government make work feel good projects. We need to do smart energy projects. Even most off the grid projects are not sustainable.

@pin65371

@@rightwingcollectiveiq I think the biggest issue is right now they need to look at the storage side more. We have a lot of renewables coming online. I know there is a pumped hydro project being worked on and there are talks of some compressed air storage projects but those take a bit to get up and running. There is no point in only having cheap power for part of the day. We need consistency. I dont agree with halting projects though. Just tell companies any new projects will need to wait. This is going to do damage to Albertas reputation. Companies stopped investing in new oil projects because of uncertainty and this will do the same thing.. I also think it wouldnt be a bad idea for the government to invest in a transmission corridor across the country. Saskatchewan and Alberta can produce a lot of renewable energy but struggles to store it. Manitoba is mostly wind and hydro. If the wind is blowing in Alberta and Saskatchewan then sending power to Manitoba means they can use less hydro. Then when we need power they can produce more hydro and feed it back to us. Same thing with BC. One nice thing with hydro dams is they can essentially just shut them off if they dont need the power. That all costs money and a lot of time though which nobody really wants to deal with. You'd be looking at like 5 billion plus just for Alberta to Winnipeg.

@@josephsmith594 Question: What is used to back up the power generated from wind farms on those windless days? Answer : Diesel Powered generation and Electricity generated from other sources. Green Energy - a waste of tax dollars and a waste of time.
@cgtrout
@cgtrout Жыл бұрын
@@watching-the-watchers55Diesel isn't used for power generation in Alberta. Natural gas however is used extensively. While renewable energy is variable in its output, it is vastly cheaper per megawatt and therefore it is smart to use it as part of the grid.

Wind power power seems unreliable and a maintenance nightmare. It won't he windmills powering the companies that fabricate windmills. Taking a good hard look at that is reasonable. Solar technology is where it's at.

It's over powered for areas just enough as i see it and it's nice to see the wind farms and photovoltaic lakes :) and in time the shapes and forms will change. New innovations which are already ready to be picked up for better deal = why pay more for ever changing energy power need and patents which are clocked timed with all tech ideas cascading and filtering real need from all in areas spaces of need towards the need in and affordability to make it happen in checked feasible moments in time:)
