Got married in a castle in Salzburg Austria and went to a hotel looking for some place to have dinner...I asked the waitress if she could dedicate a song to us...it was an all German Band, men wearing Lederhosen and women dressed in traditional dresses..I thought they would play a nice German song.....they came on stage and dedicated this song and sang it perfect...my wife died at 47 years old but i will never forget that night RIP Terry

Our cleaner at work just casually mentioned one day that a friend of his had a gym in his house. Quick investigation and it transpires that his friend was Albert Hammond. He even had the pics to back it up. Said he's a lovely guy.

What's more is that this song has a story people can relate to. The narrator goes to California with all the hopes and dreams of making it big mainly due to stories he has been led to believe. When you listen to the lyrics, you find they are not happy at all. The narrator goes to California with high hopes and dreams of making it big only to find out it was not what he imagined. Therefore, he is homesick and wants to go home to his hometown.

I remember this song confusing me a bit when I was a little kid, especially on the rainy nights in Southern California. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in the 70's. Lots of good memories both in and out of the rain.

MsBb, Hello. It was confusing to me back in the 70's as well. When I now hear the lyrics though, I'm thinking (although I could be wrong) that Albert meant it metaphorically - written from a place of pain/heartache; perhaps after having experienced hardship trying to make it as a star then; e.g., "I'm out of self respect, I'm out of bread. I'm under loved, I'm under fed. I wanna go home!"...and then the [suspected] metaphor, "It never rains in California, but girl - don't they warn you? It pours. Man, it pours." Just a thought from this 70's guy. Take care.
