So, my short lecture "Albir - the city of contrasts". The beach in Albir is not very big. 750 meters long. It is not particularly attractive. You cannot call it beautiful. But the sea and the landscape behind me are stunning. This year the Cannes Film Festival is moving to Albir. The Walk of Fame has already been moved. Albir is a former suburb of Benidorm but is now part of the municipality of Alfas del Pi. The Alfas del Pi has one of the oldest trees in Spain, the carob tree, which is over eight hundred years old.Most of the beach is occupied by playgrounds. There are three of them. And a volleyball court. In Albir 53% of the population is non-Spanish. This is the border between the beaches of Albir and Altea. Adjacent to Albir beach, Althea's chic pebble beach is often sold by property bloggers as Albir beach. The statistics are conflicting. El Albir has been using its land mainly for citrus cultivation since 1995, with almost the entire population living off tourism. Apparently tourists eat all their oranges. Alfas del Pi is home to the largest colony of Norwegians outside Norwegian territory. Albir is an ancient town. In the 5th century, large Roman thermae were built near the coast. As we understand it, the thermae are not built at the beginning of the city's formation. So it is even older than they are. Albir is at least 700 years older than Moscow. Albir is not Ivanovo. Not the city of brides. There are roughly equal numbers of women and men living here. Albir lighthouse was built in 1863 a few metres from the old Torre Bombarda, which many centuries ago served as an observation point to warn locals of possible pirate incursions into the area. Albir's beach is so small that only seven houses fit on the promenade. Some are pretty, others mediocre or just plain gloomy. From Albir, the promenade takes you to neighbouring Altea and scooter rentals come in handy. Alfas del Pi is one of the most touristy municipalities of Alicante on the Costa Blanca, with people of more than 90 nationalities. I think my short lecture will encourage many to drop their anchor in the Bay of Albira. P.S. Local connoisseurs have probably noticed by now that this is no longer Albira's waterfront. It's neighbouring Althea.
