Album Review: Deicide - Banished By Sin

I liked it but I’m admittedly a bit of a Deicide mark…Pre-ordered the vinyl of course. Dead By Dawn being the first extreme metal song I ever listened to on a mix tape that I stole from my older sister back in the day, they just have a special place for me. The last 3 tracks stood out the most for me as well as the lead bit during the last 30 seconds of Ritual Defied I thought was pretty cool too, A simple to play lead but it still sounded cool imo.

I walked away from SFU a while ago at this point, but I can still get along with new Deicide. Not bad, not amazing. Haha, I like it! Fair play 😆

I liked it. I wasn't expecting the world, and I got less than the world. BUT.. As a Death Metal/Thrash Metal album, I thought the quality of the songs were pretty good. I thought the production was great, punchy, you can hear everything including Glen's bellows and shrieks loud and clear. Fine performances from the band in all areas. I think maybe some were expecting something in the realm of the first 3 albums which cannot be touched. It's a good solid Deicide record, much better than I expected. If you lower your expectations just a little, most of the time a band like Deicide will surpass those expectations. I think when you expect a 5 star album but get a 3.5 or a 4 star album, you'll get nothing but heartbreak. I expected a 3.5 out of 5 and got a 4 out of 5. E x p e c t a t i o n s. But I get it. Good review.

Great review Matt. It's a serviceable album. I dropped off after Once Upon the Cross, but was intrigued to pick this one up and give it a spin. I agree Deicide has that signature style. I thought there were some elements here & there which seemed to be the result of new blood in the band. Plus, I've seen Steve at multiple shows in the past year or two so he's still keeping his eyes & ears streetside. Hailz from Tampa \m/

Massacre!!! Was listening to all of their albums last week. This one is still the best. I absolutely loved their last one though. My first listen of the new Deicide pretty much aligned with what the Thralls said in their review. After the 2nd and 3rd listen, I agree with this more. I'd give it around a 3.5/5. I'm really surprised Melanie Loves Death Metal shit on it so much. It's far from bad. Best album since Stench for me. I really loved that new Darkthrone album though. I wasn't expecting to like it that much. Although I think Old Star is amazing so 🤷. The new Tombstoner album is pretty cool too. Also have you heard of Arð? It's Martin Deeks from Winterfylleth. I believe he's from Northumberland. I adored the first album and liked the new one on first listen

About deicide , when recommend to someone, the conversation should be imho "listen the first one, and then a random one of your choice (possibly Serpent of the light cause its a sick song) and then you can ignore the rest". The lyrics and them taking it seriously doesnt suits me too much. Still they made history in death metal and not even an "hater" like me can deny it.

Nice one Matt! I haven't listened to the new Deicide yet, but it's great to get your review of it. I saw a review earlier today and he said it sounded like they played it safe in terms of the music. Nothing too bad, but nothing that blows you away. I like the band, so I'll check it out, though I'm still pretty new to them. The AI artwork is terrible, it must be said. And I totally get people boycotting buying it because of that. The music is more important though. Great to hear From beyond by Massacre in thebackground, I picked that up last year and it's a banger!! 😁🤘🏻🤘🏻

I had fun with it as well. It was better than the cover suggested it was going to be, but also very predictable, and exactly what I expected from new Deicide. Won’t rush to buy it, but hey, I’d pick up the CD if it was going for a decent price. Enjoyable enough album!

@@thegrimmfluencer For me, it’s not worth getting on vinyl as it is. It would be a CD job if anything, but I don’t need it. I’d barely ever bother with it. Just not that good. Artwork is important to me for the physical release as a side note though. It’s not absolutely be all end all, but there’s nothing worse than rotten artwork on a vinyl or CD copy.

Thought it was pretty poor. They haven’t released a good album since Once upon a cross. So7nds completely phoned in and boring. It seems that the Hoffmans were the secret sauce of the band. Deicide used to be face ripping live despite Benton being a piece of human trash. They are a heritage act but are like cheese under the sofa. Your a good lad Matt, but I ask a question if it’s good, why won’t you buy it ? You don’t listen to the artwork. Your review is very good. As always. Well structured and a different insight for me how music can be enjoyed. Thanks for the review, So much better than what you reviewed.

Agreed it’s very very safe, but I enjoyed it enough. Much better than the cover suggests. I mainly won’t buy it because I don’t need it to be honest. Definitely not worthy of a vinyl copy. CD I’d pick up if it was cheap, but to be Frank, the cover art is a massive part of why I like physical music (obviously it’s not the whole reason), so I don’t want to put my money into it. Honestly, it sounds just like OUTC. Generic god bashing death metal. But that's the appeal I'd say, they aren't complex anymore. Just simple groovy riffs with blast beats. I think it's kind of weird to expect a band from the 80s to be improving, pretty much all of them platu after their 5-6th album.
