I actually created my own version of Rattle and Hum by collecting the studio tracks and adding a few B-sides from the era that had that similar American sound and style. I think it would have been a great album had they released a normal studio album instead of this sprawling mess. I suspect they were intimidated by the prospect of topping the Joshua Tree. Here's the album I came up with: Desire When Love Comes to Town Silver & Gold (studio version of course) Heartland Love Rescue Me Hawkmoon 269 Angel of Harlem Hallelujah, Here She Comes Van Dieman's Land God Pt. II A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel All I Want is You

Green just barely missed my top 10, too. I find a couple-three of the songs too "bubble gummy" and the other songs aren't quite great enough to completely make up for it. After that other discussion I can only hope that none of my candidates is in the RRHOF, I created the list before I became aware of that trap... Honorable Mentions - Richard Thompson - Amnesia, Ornette Coleman - Virgin Beauty, Robert Cray - Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, Last Exit - Iron Path, Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God 5. Bad Religion - Suffer (With the longest tune just a bit over 2:30 every song is hit and run. The most melodic punk album of all times. Each tune sticks and makes its point. I trade the complete Green Day catalogue for these 25 minutes of pure power and energy.) 4. Traveling Wilburys - Vol. 1 (This might have gone fatally wrong if it had been planned and executed by the music industry - but it was not. Instead five friends forgot about their superstardom and simply showed their songwriting skills to have some fun. Good for us who can enjoy it with them. This music just makes everybody happy and sing along. Tweeter and the Monkey Man is the best Bob Dylan parody you may ever hear and only one could provide it...the man himself.) 3. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (Noise turns into art turns into rock'n'roll and when you think you know where you are at, they take another unexpected turn. They really needed the space they found here to develop their aural statements. Ugly and unsettling and very beautiful at the same time. It is considered a masterwork for good reasons.) 2. Pere Ubu - The Tenement Year (In the 70s there was a very special version of progressive rock in Germany called Krautrock - these guys are from Ohio and mix it with surf music and garage rock. An absolute unique blend but full of melodies and hooks that stay with you long after you listened.) 1. Patti Smith - Dream of Life (After her 4th album Wave in 1979 Patti chose to focus on her marriage and children with former MC5 guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith. She returned in 1988 with the energy and directness that had made Horses one of the strongest debut album in rock history. The fact that the music she played was nearly the same as a decade ago only showed how durable the stuff was. People Have the Power...and some never lose it.)

I love all the albums below. I'm not saying I like them. I love them. I listen often to them and I consider them an important part of my life...and there are 20 albums!! I'm aware of the subjective nature of the music listening experience and the fact that because of my age, I was 16 in 1988, this is a period of time personally important for me. I was creating my own identity and these albums were playing a relevant role in this respect. But still. I doubt there are many years where I can find so many records that I really love. So, when I hear people saying that the music of the 80s was generally garbage, I have to strongly disagree. Yes, I also hate that awful mainstream 80s production... Some very good albums in 1988 but only one has crossed over to excellent. Fisherman's Blues - The Waterboys 9 Big music transitions into fiddle driven folk rock but it's still driven by Mike Scott's passionate songwriting and singing. The Mona Lisa's Sister - Graham Parker 8.5 A more straightforward production and strong songwriting creates the best Parker album for a while. From Langley Park To Memphis - Prefab Sprout 8.5 A fine follow-up to Steve McQueen packed with quality tunes. It includes their one UK top 20 single. I'm baffled why their catchy tunes weren't more successful. Starfish - The Church 8 Another very good album from fhis Australian psychedelic rock band. This album was their most successful in terms of sales. Copperhead Road - Steve Earle 8 Earle steps towards the Americana, heartland rock territory of singers like John Mellencamp but he hasn't lost all his country influences. The First Of A Million Kisses - Fairground Attraction 8 A charming album of folk pop, most famous for the UK #1 single Perfect. Surfer Rosa - Pixies 8 I find it hard to appreciate noisy alternative rock but the Pixies are an exception. This album has the noise and power but is also packed with melodies. I probably should have mentioned the EP, Come On Pilgrims in 1987 but it's often packaged with this album. Green - R.E.M. 8 The first R.E.M. album I bought and still one of my top 3 or 4 favourites by the band. The vocals are clear, the tunes strong and we're starting to see the acoustic songs that will lead them to great success over the next few years. Zilch - Shack 8 The demise of The Smiths left a vacancy as the best UK indie rock band. Shack could have grabbed the title if they'd built up momentum rather than leaving long gaps between albums. Even better albums are to come from Michael Head and his band. Gladstone, Humour & Blue - Martin Stephenson 8 A very good second album by this British folk/pop/rock singer songwriter but I recommend you start with the debut, Boat To Bolivia Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk 8 Tranquil, moody, atmospheric and haunting with much more focus on textures than tunes. Traveling Wilburys Vol 1 - Traveling Wilburys 8 I'm cautious of "supergroups" but this album works very nicely. A good time was had by the players and by me listening. I hope I didn't miss anything out because I moved onto 1989 a few days early.

I’ve been REALLY looking forward to this one 😊 Here are my picks... 1 - The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane 2 - Jane’s Addiction - Nothing’s Shocking 3 - The Sugarcubes - Life’s Too Good 4 - Pixies - Surfer Rosa 5 - Dinosaur Jr - Bug

Already loved your channel, but now recognizing TPOH all around blew me away. Love these "best album" segments. TPOH is one of my all time favorites, but LOVE JUNK is the absolute best they did. Looking forward to see if Spilt Milk by Jellyfish, another fantastic but overlooked album in my opinion, makes a later cut. Thanks for the feedback too.

Dinosaur Jr. - Bug (i think it's a big step down from You're Living All Over Me which is my aoty for 1987 but it's still Dino Jr. doing what they do really well)

We've got some matches again. The Leonard Cohen album was a contender until I realised how much more I enjoyed the versions of the songs on the Live In London album. That's very much my go-to-album for Cohen.

@@paulsimister944 We should've had three more in common because: Surfer Rosa, Green and Fisherman's Blues would've been honourable mentions for me too. Agree with you guys on 1988. Not a spectacular year, and I'm with Joe here, leaning towards metal. After all, the best thing about the 1980s was metal \m/ IMHO. Thanks all for mentioning TPOH. Completely new to me, but I sure will be checking it out! I think I only found one 5-star album from 1988 in my collection, so my favorite of the year was quite easy. And to be honest, not sure I could give any of the rest higher than 3 1/2 stars... :( 1. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. As Joe said, their last great album, and arguably their magnum opus. 2. David Lee Roth - Skyscraper. Steve Vai and David Lee Roth were a fun combo. I just like the fun and happy vibe that this album gives me. Perfect for a roofless drive on a summer's day. 3. Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden. Yet another interesting progressive pop effort from my favorite 80s band alongside a-ha and Prefab Sprout. 4. Prefab Sprout - From Langley Park To Memphis. Pure pop sensation! 5. A-ha - Stay On These Roads. An uneven effort from the Norwegian synth pop group, but the deep cuts are great - the singles suck! This Alone Is Love, Hurry Home, There's Never A Forever Thing, Out Of Blue Comes Green and even The Blood That Moves The Body are all stunning pop tunes. And honorable mentions goes to: Yngwie Malmsteen - Odyssey The Traveling Wilburys Megadeth - So Far So Good... Metallica - ...And Justice For All (Would have been in my Top 5 if it wasn't for the horrendous production) Queensrÿche - Operation Mind Crime W.A.S.P. - The Headless Children David Foster - The Symphony Sessions Testament - The New Order Toto - The Seventh One Sandra - Into A Secret Land Slayer - South of Heaven

It was a fantastic year for hip-hop, so strong that N.W.A. doesn't even make my top ten. Leonard Cohen made one of the all-time comebacks. 1988 was the year pop or chart music fell off a cliff. It’s never really recovered on both sides of the pond. You could find some good alternative stuff, and some of that alternative stuff would break into the charts (mainly the album charts), but the days of finding pop gems in the top 40 were over
@Ianmackable4 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. Especially in the UK, plenty of cool stuff was still to be found on the charts. The Pogues were having hits. Neneh Cherry's Buffalo Stance, one of my all-time faves, is right around the corner. KLF had an amazing run. Madonna was peaking. Prince was still happening.
