Watch the official videos released for ‘Turn Of The Wheel’, ‘Sword Of Deliverance', ‘Guardian Angel’, 'Grace of God and 'Target' here: • ALCATRAZZ - V
Formed in 1983, Alcatrazz became famous for its blend of melodic and progressive rock and for introducing guitar heroes Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai. Emerging in 1983 with No Parole from Rock 'n’ Roll, which featured the hit ‘Island in the Sun’, the band continued building popularity in 1985 with their sophomore effort, Disturbing the Peace, which contained the hit, ‘God Blessed Video’. The band issued one more studio LP, 1986’s Dangerous Games, before ceasing operations the following year. The band regrouped and released highly acclaimed Born Innocent in 2020, their first studio album containing all-new material since 1986.
Both vintage and timeless, V treads the Alcatrazz textured-territories of old but with renewed vigor and verve. Whether it be the choral-echoes sitting inside the storming tempest which is ‘Nightwatch,’ the staunch, speedy melodic metal of ‘Turn Of The Wheel’ or the thick, bluesy chug of ‘House Of Lies,’ there is little doubt that this Alcatrazz is going full-tilt with not one ounce of a shackle holding them back. “The new album brings us full circle from our original roots to a modern much heavier version of all things Alcatrazz in 2021,” confirms Shea. “I feel great and I have been looking forward to the release of our new album with its heavy rocking metal sounds.”
Produced by Giles Lavery and Jimmy Waldo, and mixed by Andy Haller (Elton John, Joe Cocker and System of a Down), V also includes guest appearances from Saxon’s Nigel Glockler (drums on ‘Guardian Angel’ and ‘Blackheart’), Tank’s Cliff Evans (bass on ‘Grace of God’) and Donnie Van Stavern of Riot (bass on ‘Guardian Angel’, ‘Nightwatch’ and ‘Target’), underscoring how perennially popular Alcatrazz’s music remains with their peers.
And just in case you’re wondering what V stands for? Alcatrazz’s fifth studio album of course… but it also stands just as resolutely for Victory; the victory that sees Alcatrazz 2021 stronger than ever despite all the odds.
Track Listing:
1. Guardian Angel
2. Nightwatch
3. Sword Of Deliverance
4. Turn Of The Wheel
5. Blackheart
6. Grace Of God
7. Return To Nevermore
8. Target
9. Maybe Tomorrow
10. House Of Lies
11. Alice’s Eyes
12. Dark Day For My Soul
ALCATRAZZ is:
Doogie White - Vocals
Joe Stump - Guitars

@Impellitterii, in your praise for this fantastic track, you left out keyboardist extraordinaire, Jimmy Waldo. Let's not kid ourselves. Although this song has a great guitar solo and some very good vocals and lyrics, Jimmy Waldo contributes some great keyboard parts and he wrote all (or at least nearly all) of the music for this wonderful track.

A few minutes ago, I DISCOVERED SOMETHING NEW about this song that I never was aware of before!!!! The Songwriting credits for Island In The Sun lists Malmsteen, Waldo, & Bonnet. Earlier, I was checking out some rough, unreleased demos by the band New England, which happens to be the band that bassist Gary Shea & keyboardist Jimmy Waldo played in prior to joining Bonnet in Alcatrazz. Right before I played this video, I heard the New England demo "Take Another Ride" for the very first time. AS SOON AS I HEARD THE FIRST 3 or 4 CHORDS OF THE INTRO, I SAID TO MYSELF "THIS is 'ISLAND IN THE SUN'". Yes, the intro & chorus sections of "Island In The Sun" are lifted directly from the New England demo "Take Another Ride" with nearly identical sounding bass, keys, and drums although they were rather crudely recorded in the demo. There are some differences though and the changes that were made by Alcatrazz are definitely for the better. The verse section was reworked a bit (made heavier, less pop, and superior keys), the song's name and lyrics were completely changed, and to no one's surprise Yngwie's guitar solo was a definite improvement over the solo in the demo version. The Songwriting credits for 'Island In The Sun' lists Malmsteen, Waldo, & Bonnet as song writers. Unfortunately, I didn't have access to the New England CD box set that the demo came from so I was unable to see the songwriting credits for "Take Another Ride". (95% or more of New England's songs were written by their guitarist John Fannon, but it is apparent that Waldo either wrote "Take Another Ride" or he was the primary co-writer for the song.) As for the Alcatrazz credits, I'm sure Bonnet deserves much (if not all) the credit for the new lyrics (although Waldo could have contributed to the lyrics). Bonnet likely contributed to the changes made in the verse melody, also. Although most of the keyboard parts are the same as those in the New England demo, Jimmy Waldo definitely rewrote his keyboard parts for the verse (making them much more complex and layered). I am a bit puzzled as to why Yngwie was credited as a songwriter. I'm sure he wrote 100% of the guitar solo, but it would be very unusual and highly suspect to think Yngwie got a songwriting credit for his guitar solo despite the fact it is an incredible solo. Perhaps, he helped make changes to the verses, but I'm willing to bet that Waldo and Bonnet deserve most of the credit for changes to the verses. Although Waldo was a co-writer on about half of the songs on the Alcatraz debut album, I do believe he wrote all (or most all) of the music for this song.

Bonnet has such a unique look. I love it. Its some kinda Miami Vice feel. Reminder that most rockers at the time grew out their blonde locks and wore denim, leather, and towards the mid to late 80s some dabbled with spandex.

Rumor is Richie Blackmore was angry that Graham cut his hair. I think it was brilliant. Stood apart from all the long haired singers of the day. And what a voice. My god. This is Malmsteens best solo in my opinion..Its short and full of his licks but its tasteful and has some feeling in it.. I think it was his best work . The rest is full on speed and accuracy but zero soul.. This was before my time , but i wonder what the general consensus was when they first heard This.. That solo and guitar playing is on another planet from anything at the time.

NOT Grunge ALL Grunge blows! We literlaly went from "Girls, Girls, Girls", "I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day", "Pour some sugar on me" (even though i dont care for most of that music) to crap bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana (overrated), Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. Whiny, hate everything, undo yourself, crap music. But thats what the record labels pushed so thats what america started to consume. Even though Metal was still raging in the background to most! Metal will always be the Best!

I can see why Yngwie didn’t last with Alcatrazz. The camera wasn’t on him nearly enough…

A surprisingly poppy song for Yngwie.
