I had a cab ride in a Lehigh Valley RS-3 in 1965. Because I was 12 at the time I recall how tall the steps were to climb up to the rear side entrance door. The unit was loud, shook from the v12 engine idle, coupling up to freight cars and pulling them away with ease. The LV freight crews were polite & fun people to know. I once lived directly behind the switch siding to Hyatt Roller Bearing & the National Gypsum Paper Company. The two mentioned Industries no longer exist today. If my parents only owned a decent 135 photo camera back then. The LV ALCO Fleet RS-3, S-2, FA-1 and PA-2 all showed up on the weekends to work the Factory siding.

The RS-3 Switcher is a beautiful old diesel. It was cool to see the inside of one!

As a student engineer on PC, NJ Div. I ran the 5320, the only RS3 assigned to N. Joisey in the late '70's. Beat the crap out of it, couldn't kill it.

I don't understand the whistle signals whenever the engine makes a move. We never did that on the Class I. In the yard you would be blowing the whistle 50 times a shift.

Also, as a railroad safety measure, it's always good practice to check that nothing is obstructing the switch points (debris of some sort) that would prevent the switch from being thrown.

Make my day just to talk to a experienced engineer the engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954

I'd love to ride in the cab of an RS3! Heck any diesel road switcher for that matter. Very cool. Was this on an excursion?

You can actually pay to drive this train or a steam train. It's like $760 for one engine, 1700 for engine with cars, 1170 for 2 engine trips in 2 engine, and then like 2k for 2 engine trips with cargo. I'm going to be doing the $1170 one next year
@Shane-Singleton2 жыл бұрын
@@locomotiveproductions I think i'd probably be down for at least a single engine package. I actually got a chance to drive a GE 80 tonner last year when I was on vacation. That was VERY fun!

@@Shane-Singleton isn't that a switcher? If its what i think it is, that's absolutely awesome

@@locomotiveproductions Yes it is. Even still used the old air throttle rather than the notch style. A very cool experience. Only lasted a few minutes but put a checkmark next to a life-long action item :)
