Alcohol Stove Carbon Felt Redeemed

I wasn't convinced that carbon felt in my alcohol stoves was bad so I did some more experimenting. I trimmed down the carbon felt so it left an air space for the alcohol to vaporize and tested it by boiling water.
See how it stacks up against an unmodified alcohol stove.

I had also tried carbon felt between the walls of my stove. I was trying to figure out why it was not working as I thought it would, when I came across this video. Thanks you had the answer I was looking for. My felt was cut too high... I cut the felt shorter and BOOM it works beautifully!

Great vid as always! I'm a stover myself. As a matter of fact, I got into building stoves by watching your channel! Over time I've come up w/ some mods of my own that make stoves perform better as I also do some prototyping as well. Thanks for sharing!

I love your videos TimCan and have just completed one of your stoves. Top notch! WRT carbon felt, the only small disadvantage I see is that you can't pour back excessive fuel soaked in the felt, whilst with your original design you are not wasting excess fuel at all. Of course, if you know exactly how much fuel you need for a certain amount of liquid to boil, then there will be no wastage.

Thanks again, Klaus! I usually just pour in a measured 30ml of alcohol and that does it. I never worry about pouring unused alcohol back in the little bottle I carry it in.

Based on this test, I still think I'll stay with the original. If a bigger improvement were seen I might upgrade. Who knows, maybe there will be more testing down the road. Thanks Tim.

I've become an addict to DIY soda can alcohol stove KZbin videos. From the crude to the exquisite like yours, to see if can I learn anything new. Even the crude are interesting. There seems to be a whole lot of what I would call the Japanese videos. Videos with only annoying music, but still interesting. I was drawn to your stove because it is made out of just 1 soda can and no adhesives or aluminum tape. It's really an intriguing little stove. Like Dave mentions below, with no significant improvement there's almost no reason to modify it. But, I'm wondering about jet hole size, and how that affects the run time/heat output. Some videos guys push the push pin tack all the way in. You have even suggested two sizes, push pin tack point halfway in and a #54 drill bit, both different. I'll just have to build another. Next one I'd like to drill the holes.

Do you have the total boil time for each stove? Whichever one has the longest boil time will be the most efficient stove. I knew that the regular stove burns approximately 20 minutes because when I boiled eggs on mine outside, it took about 10 minutes to bring water and 2 eggs to a boil and another 10 minutes to cook them.
@timcanthejigman7932

Hey David, good point. The unmodified stove went on at 1:30, began boiling at 10:30 and was empty at 20:00. The carbon felt one went on at 1:00, boiled at 9:30 and was out at 18:30. Close enough that I'd want to make several of each stove and take averages to really arrive at conclusions. Should I send you some new ones for testing? :)

TimCan The Jig Man No thank you... if they both have the same amount of boil time then the better stove may be quickest blooming, most wind tolerant, lesser cost of materials, etc. Can't wait for your other experiments!

I see an integrated pot stand somewhere in your future inventions, Tim. BTW, can you say where to get those fancy pots like that?
@timcanthejigman7932
@timcanthejigman7932 5 жыл бұрын
Funny you should mention that, I've been thinking of a better way to have the pot standoff from the stove. Look for an upcoming video. The fancy (!) pots are from Walmart. They're grease pots in the housewares section for about $8.

Her, Tim! Great vid. If you want to avoid cold pot kill, take a flat-faced nipper and @ every 4th jet make a dimple in the rim. Don't go too deep into the rim or it will split! Then lightly buff off any sharp edges. The gap will be so small it will not effect efficiency and the pot only sets on those small bumps.

Sounds like what happens with the fancy feast if you don't put the breathing hole.
@timcanthejigman7932

I'm not familiar with those but sounds like no breather hole also doesn't allow the alcohol to vaporize.

Ok, ow Im really confused because you said in another comment you dont use this anymore but this is your latest video here on stoves ? Plus, Im wondering why you dont use a fancee feast type. I thought those also worked better in cold weather with no bloom time!

I don't recall the comment you're referring to but this is the only type of stove I use. I may have been saying that I don't use carbon felt anymore. I don't do fancy feast stoves because they don't appeal to my aesthetic sense and I don't have a cat.
