I went into rehab on 12-12-93. When I got out, I joined a aa group, got me a sponsor and started working the 12 steps. On 12-12-20, I will be sober 27 years.

I’m over here on 10 days of severe alcohol withdrawal and I’ve been trying to stop for 7. The vomiting,sweat,shakes is what keeps me drinking. When I try to stop, seeing relaxing and positive videos helps. This guy makes me feel like he could care less and If I died, he would be grateful for having less to deal with.

That's how I feel I get treated by doctors all the time when I'm in hospital. It probably is how they feel about alcoholics. The thing is, we're not drinking for fun anymore, it's to stop us getting really ill. I've had seizures and DTs and it's no fun. Good luck with your recovery.

Doctors work like this they see the medical condition not so much the patient and I'm OK with this, for other aspects of the disease/help there are psychologists or therapists.

I been drinking 4-18 drinks everyday for a year. but usually like 10 in the evening and I always pass out every night. I stopped drinking 3 days ago and have no tremors or shaking. My question is should I worry about seizures with no apparent withdrawal symptoms other than mild insomnia and loss of appetite? My other question is, well I've also been taking 3mg of Ativan for like 8 months but I'm completely tolerant to it as far as feeling any effect from it other than withdrawal. is it possible for Ativan to actually be curbing the alcohol withdrawal. I only ask because I feel immune to Ativan and am wondering if it still retains its ant seizure effect with complete tolerance?

Just got into treatment and am in danger (did it up wrong 30 years 12-24 daily). You covered a lot of ground quickly and ICU issues. Have had baby Grand Mals even in uptake during cutback. Recently got a CIWA overview. Thanks for your sensible advice.

Ativan is appropriate for anxiety disorders because it's short-term but the point about valium is the reality of the patient. Ativan does not prevent seizures. If you are confronted with a patient with a history of patho-resistence these drugs should be taken into account. If you have a patient with a history of seizures, avoid Ativan at all costs, because of the reaction that sets in when it leaves the system abruptly. A long half-life is important in a drug like Valium. Follow-up with either a doctor or detox and care in the system should be incorporated: but the reality is that advanced alcoholic withdrawal should involve diazepam over a reduced period (taper). The ability for the patient to take in fluids, etc. will vary. Some patients are aware of their situation and all these factors are relevant. I've had 3 seizures in various hospitals because of the ineffective intervention of staff. Often IVs are not necessary; intermuscular thiamine injections help the nurses and the doctor is able to collect relevant data.

Agreed. But I will argue the research shows phenobarbital is superior to Valium.

Drink in moderation or not at all. I get seizures and DTs. Well, I did, not anymore cause I had enough and tapered and help from my true family (not blood related, most) and friends. I also popped pills and did cocaine, it was bad, just live life to the fullest and you do not need to be drugged up to do it. My average BAC was .5, absolutely disgusting.

One drug not on the list to prevent withdrawal effects is Morphine, which benzos are derived from, you will not get high at all on benzos (in my experience), and the withdrawal from massive doses of benzos, suddenly stopped = the same as or worse than alcohol withdrawal... In the UK no way will you get barbs, or propofol!

Not what I expected and definitely not what I needed. This needs to be in a separate category to prevent alcoholics from wasting their recovery time.

Lecture on alcohol withdrawal and this guy has a 20 ounce bottle of soda on the desk. Not much difference in impact on the liver. Sugar is an addictive substance. Interesting irony.
@joeschmo56998 жыл бұрын
lynn ann blades Yes, alcohol has acute toxic effects. But its impact on the body, and the liver, long-term, appear to be less of a problem, less chronically toxic, than sugar when consumed in equivalent, moderate amounts. (depending on your definition of moderate). For example, a man might drink 2 beers, or 2 glasses of wine per day for years and experience no measurable impact on the liver. If the same man was to drink 2 (12 oz) sodas (about 18 to 24 tspns of sugar) per day for years, he could likely come down with Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. Am I making sense? Sugar does not have acute toxic effects (although, some would argue that anything that spikes blood glucose is effectively toxic to the body and requires and emergency response by the body to bring that blood glucose down). A particular problem with sugar (sucrose and HFCS) is that about 50% is fructose and fructose must be metabolized in the liver (sort of like alcohol). If there are too many calories being consumed in addition to excess fructose, this destroys the liver over time, hence NAFLD. Chronically, sugar might be more of a problem because you don't realize it's destroying your body because you don't experience "acute" toxic effects. Make sense? Sugar has been getting a free pass when it is clearly a major contributor to diabesity. I'm just pointing out that it really is worse than alcohol.It's more insidious.
@joeschmo56998 жыл бұрын
lynn ann blades uh, no, but I'd forgotten I'd commented on this particular video. I guess I thought your response was from a different video. Obviously I'm somewhat on a crusade to demonize sugar.I think the western medical establishment has very specific ways of behaving. And sometimes it lacks common sense. Alcohol is viewed particularly darkly, because of the potential for addiction and the acute toxicity. I'm just sayin' sugar is ruining lives too. And it's addictive too. But, no, you won't kill someone else if you get into a car after drinking a 20 oz. soda or, at least, it won't impair you ability to drive a car. Talking on a cell phone or texting while driving? Well, that might. But that's another issue.
@joeschmo56998 жыл бұрын
Bothropus Eh? How do you know what my life choices are and whether they are poor? Diet pepsi has been shown to cause greater poor health, weight gain and diabetes than regular soda. Apparently it negatively impacts gut bacteria which, in turn, promotes insulin resistance by yet another pathway (in addition to simply too many refined and processed foods).
@joeschmo56998 жыл бұрын
***** I would argue they are both poison. Alcohol acute, sugar chronic. If the medical establishment had spent the same amount of time warning people of sugar over the last 100 years as they have done about alcohol, I think there would be much less disease in the world. Sugar is the relatively new kid on the block. It's only been around in massive volumes since the 20th century. Alcohol has been brewed since the dawn of civilization.
@joeschmo56998 жыл бұрын
***** "saturated fat causes disease not sucrose." Just think about the implication of what you've said (it is exactly what the food industry wants people to believe). you've said a naturally occurring substance, that appears in natural, whole, and perishable foods causes disease while a highly processed substance, that has gone through significant industrial extraction methods and is added to a variety of foods, doesn't Yeah, exactly what they want you to think. It doesn't make sense, does it?
