I'm 62 and recently widowed. I've always loved watching slight of hand magic and have always had this one really simple disappearing coin trick I've done since childhood. I now have 3 terrific grandchildren ages 4,5&6. They love stuff like this and are always trying to learn tricks. Since I'm disabled & I can't do any activities if they can't be done from a chair I'm always looking to entertain them without just sticking them in front of a screen to watch KZbin or whatever. I have big hands and decided to do some of these. I bought 2 identical decks of cards . Elastic thread etc. I've been practicing doing the first part of the trick. A convincing double flip as you called it. It works about 1/2 the time & I'm sure it will get better with time but my confidence is shaky. I figured there must be a way to help make it so 100% of the time the double flip is prefect followed by exposing the top card at the end without the second card being exposed accidentally because of the substance I use to help the 2 cards kind of stick together for the double flip. I was gonna use glue dots. One on each corner to help the top card stick enough to the 2nd card but yet release for the showing of the top card at the end. Since I didn't have any micro glue dots ( tiny 1/8" dots) & they weren't due to arrive till the next day I saw I had a tube of Gorilla clear grip. A crystal clear glue used for lots of things. I put a little dab of the glue on one corner of the face of the card that would be on top and then spread it straight down along the edge of the card to the bottom corner . It left a very thin line of the super clear glue along the edge that I let dry for about 5 minutes. The result is an almost invisible line of glue that has a rubber-like grip but is invisible to the audience. Even pretty close up. When I go to pull the top card(s) off the top of the deck to show people what it is & to remember it 2 cards come off EVERY Time it works perfect to drag the second card with it but since I let the glue dry it's only stuck to the top card so when I go to show everyone at the end that the card I showed at the beginning of the trick was truly gone ( I LIFT ) The top & slide the top card off to expose it and the 2nd one stays put. I know I just wrote a book here but I wanted you to be able to picture what I meant since I can't post a video in the comments here. Thanks for the great lessons. Let me know what you think of my idea. Is it original or is it something widely used that I just happen to also think of ? Thanks again.
@JeffO-

Very cool about showing your grandkids. Sorry to hear about being recently widowed. Have you looked into the double lift? That's what you want to do instead of glue, if I'm understanding you correctly. Takes a LOT of practice.
@otallono
@otallono Жыл бұрын
Glue dots aren't going to work, they would notice there are two cards. you're better off just practicing and doing it right. But i mean, isn't double stick tape better than glue dots? There's also a kind of wax meant for effects that require two cards to stick together.
@littlesister3477
@littlesister3477 Жыл бұрын
@@otallono practice is a wonderful thing and always the best course but for some of us , especially ones that have had jobs their entire lives that have just abused their hands etc it leaves them almost numb by the time your in your early 60's . I was a carpet layer. My knees & hands were my tools . Now all the practice in the world will not do it. I need help. I'm not looking to do shows in front of audiences. Like I said simply in front of my grandchildren. The glue dots were just one of many ideas and I actually found one that worked well. Stick em spray . The stuff pro athletes use . It's invisible and a light spray ,let it dry and it's just enough to help both the cards stay together enough for me to perform the trick but with the slightest nudge the stuck cards separate like normal. Plus I spray it on my hands & it helps my grip. Like I said. It's just the boost I need in the grip for what I'm doing and not noticeable by even the closest inspection. Thanks for all the great advice. I do try it all first then modify it for myself only if needed.

Some people think that learning how a trick is done ruins it. Maybe it does for some. For me… I am even more amazed when I see how he put it together. Had I not known I likely would have assumed the trick was simpler. As it was, I’m impressed and thanks!!!
@jpx1508
@jpx1508 Жыл бұрын
Fascinating. I assumed there were one, maybe two, moves I missed. It turns out reality is much more imaginative and creatively complex... and much more entertaining. All of which brings more credit to the original "magic" - the moves and props were completely effective.
@izg2
@izg2 Жыл бұрын
@@jpx1508 Exactly, you know its a "trick" and not magic. Seeing the ingenuity does not detract, it adds to the enjoyment, for me at least.
@otallono

It depends. If it's like these ones where you end up realizing it's not practical for real life, it kind of ruins it. You'd have to be sitting at a table with this set up waiting for people to walk in and see you sitting by yourself awkwardly covering a piece of card on the table 😂 works for the camera because you need to come in tight, not moving your arms out of frame but in real life this looks weird and unnatural.

I got into magic when I was a little kid but it quickly lost its allure once I started buying the tricks and found most decks are setup etc. the movie the Prestige did bring back some interest in it but this video is pretty neat. That said, I would have never thought to make a trick like this. Thinking it up and the execution is the real magic/skill. Anyone can figure most of the tricks out after the fact.

This is a skilled trick - the subtleties of handling are what makes it convincing. There is actually a one frame flash at 27.00 that gives a clue (the dangers of YT slow replay!) but I was so convinced by the presentation I even doubted that it was a flash. In any live show this would be scarily impressive.

the trick is amazing. the explanation and tutorial are appreciated. since I'm not a magician my opinion doesn't carry much weight, but it seemed that after taping the gimmick down and positioning your hand it appears the only way to truly hide what you're doing is to make sure the the observer is positioned where your camera was and never moves from that spot.

The best part is that once you are performing the "rub it up vanish", to a normal audience this just serves it's purpouse of hiding a card without being noticed. But for a magician spectator, this becomes a huge missdirection, exploiting the magic knowledge of the viewer, so when you bring up the cutout and then vanish it, it makes the trick soo fooling to a magician's eye! This is so cool.

Some honest feedback: on seeing for the first time the weird false draw looked like a false draw. I think strange hand position telegraphed the false draw. I also guessed that only a small piece of a card was under your hand, again, because of the awkward hand positions, but I did not know how it got there. I did not know how the vanish was done. Performance was great. I could never pull this off.
