The Knight Rider theme music is also copyrighted, but still used here in this clip. One might ask why they were able to get permission to use the theme music but unable to get permission to use just a part of the opening narration. Stating the obvious here but to my knowledge it was Richard Baseheart who read the opening narration.

When KR first debuted, there were quite a few references to Trans-Am and Pontiac throughout the season. However, customers were going to Pontiac dealerships thinking the KR look was a option. Needless to say they were disappointed to find out it wasn't. So, from Season 2 until the show ended, KITT was referred to as a "black t-top".

It wasn't the SAME theme music... The Shrek films (and some others) used the Mission Impossible theme, played with slight re-arrangements, so there must be no issues there. And the theme music used in this clip has different arrangements and played with different instruments if you listen carefully. The same goes for the red scanner sound. They didn't use sound excerpts from the original series, it would be copyright infringment.

Yea, also just a bit of info on the subject "T-Top" was short for "Targa Top" and was nicknamed T-top because the shape in between the two panes of glass looked like a T! Other names for the car would be Pontiac Trans Am, or Firebird!

Sorry for the 8-year old correction here, but T-Tops are different than Targa Tops. Targas are a fully removable roof with no center divider. The Toyota Supra is a classic example of a Targa Top. T-Tops are named that because of the center divider which forms a T shape (although in my opinion it looks more like a classic Ɪ shape).
