We here in brazil(at least i can speak for all of the the real F1 fans post Senna's death) didn't get over that championship loss in the last moments over the 2008 season until today and that is a topic that we discuss in F1 communities of Brazil groups and fans until now. Thank you again, also for the excellent content. Cheers from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
@jorgealain5126

@Stealth Leopard Well, that's an overcomplicated thing to answer to. Here in Brazil there is a certain type of culture in which we classify the drivers who brought us championships as gods (in a way this culture was nourished by our great history and culture under football until 2002). We lived in a very tough and extremely cruel military dictatorship, violent from 1964 until the democratic reopening in 1989, where we had our first quasi-democratic elections. A dark and terrible period, civilly speaking, in which any victory, whether in the cultural or sporting sphere, allowed us to express what little freedom of expression we had. When we could celebrate something, in the face of an over inflation and devaluation of our currency and purchasing power. Where over 20 years we had five changes of economic currency and several sinking's and financial destructions with inflation reaching more than 1200%, with product prices varying up to four times a day. Even after this break with the dictatorship in 1989, we continue to see anyone who won important things like Deuses and Ayrton Senna was one of those. After him, we only had expressive representation in formula 1 with Barrichello and then with Felipe Massa in 2007, 2008 and 2009. For us who are assiduous fans and for those who only sporadically followed Formula 1 after Senna's death; Barrichello and Massa represented for us the very best in world motorsport. So, taking all that into consideration, the 2008 championship backfired in the 45th minute of the second half. Where we saw one of our little hopes of being happy for a brief moment, taken away from us. Now add it all up to any news you can follow from all the punches, blows and kicks we've suffered in our youthful democracy to the terrible and catastrophic government of Jair Messias Bolsonaro, and you can understand a little bit of why we consider so much everything we live in it was Barrichello and Massa as something extremely important. Losing 2008, at the very end, and later seeing Barrichello lose to Brawn and Button in 2009 simply tore our hearts out in what we considered to be our last hope of international representation since we won the FIFA World Cup in 2002.

Alonso Trulli - Nope, Renault "killed" his career if anything, but not really because he continued racing for years. Piquet - Again, Renault for sure killed his career (combined with himself for actually going through with it, and then trying to use it to blackmail the team.) Massa - Didn't kill his career. Nothing changed. 2008 was a combination of the season of his life, the best car, Kimi not having much luck and not being mega motivated since he won the last season. That season aside, he was always a super, super good number two driver and he continued to be afterwards. Kimi - You can't kill someone's career if they are only there to race cars. Kimi just came back cos he liked racing F1 cars. He continues to do that to this day. Vandoorne - I'll give you that one. Probably did wreck his career.

Strange you omitted Giancarlo Fisichella who is the one I really want an answer for. Fisi was pretty much the King of the Midfield for so many years and upon making a return to the Renault team where he had taken so many underdog podiums, he was expected to be a serious threat to Alonso. He was better than Ralf Schumacher, Wurz, Button, Sato, Firman and Massa. But it never really happened in 05 or 06 and he looked absolutely at sea. For the rest of his career too, he was beaten by Kovalainen, Raikkonen and occasionally by Sutil too. Did Alonso's pace just break him?

@Leo Bernardo Bottas could be better but he joined Mercedes in the times when Ferrari was finally ready to challange for a title. So merc could not let their boys race as they did years before. And then after two years of being number two, it was hard for him. And now Perez, I have no idea what that idiot Helmut thinks, but he will not get a good second driver if they always have just a year with knife on their necks. Gasly is good driver, had half a season, because of bad start. Albon is good driver, one and half season, knife on the neck for whole year. Perez is proven good driver, now after 2 bad races Helmut is not happy and looking for options in F2 and F3. That guy is the worst "head of driver development program" ever.

Alonso didn't 'ruin' Kimi's career. If anything understeery Ferraris did. Kimi was a championship quality driver in 2012/13. But he famously prefers oversteery cars which is the complete opposite to Alonso who won his championships forcible inducing understeer. Seb too needs a stable rear end. Put Kimi into a Ferrari designed around Alonso and he was always gonna struggle. And why would they try to change those characteristics with Seb replacing Alonso?

He couldn't influence the 2014 design, as he was still at Lotus in 2013. It was basically completely designed to fit Alonso as he was the only driver Ferrari could get feedback from. As we know, Alonso prefers an understeery car, while Kimi prefers a pointier front-end. Kimi probably knew from the beginning that there was no way of fixing a car that was designed to suit a completely different driving style from the very beginning and thus didn't bother to develop the 2014 Ferrari.

I REALLY want to know wtf happened to Kimi in 2014 and then until 2018. I can only conclude that Fernando had been with the team for five years at that point and that he knew how to wrangle those Ferrari's and Kimi went from a car that he liked to something that was Alonso-flavored and simply dealt with it until he was gone. There were a few situations where Kimi was held back from Vettel at Ferrari and it seemed like Vettel was always the golden boy. Surely Kimi wouldn't put up with that just to drive in circles for a paycheck? Maybe he didn't give a shit anymore? It wasn't really until 2018 that he was competitive to 2012/2013 levels again. At least he scored more points than each prior season while he was there the 2nd time, which he couldn't claim about his first stint...

This was a mistake. Patrese retired and Verstappen did far worse. Herbert allowed Benetton to win Constructors. Massa isn't a doctor. He was definitely above top Vettel as he just had to beat Webber. Only around Malaysia did he found a driving style that he could Really push. And to only finish 4 points behind Alonso in your rookie year in the dog of a car is remarkable to say the least. In 2018, Vandoorne told the Belgian media that McLaren could not give him the set-up that he prefered (very similar to a Vettel-like setup). No wonder hè couldnt put in good performances week in week out. After he was dropped he Said to Sporza that he wasnt allowed to talk about 99% of the stuff that happened at McLaren… And one More thing, Vandoorne was incredible Just before His F1 career, and did a fantastic job in the categories after his F1 career….

Fernando is an absolutely amazing driver, but greatest of all time certainly not. Being the greatest of all time requires a driver to be the whole package a team player and having the forethought to pick the right teams at the right times, to win as many championships as possible after 2006 Fernando picked the wrong teams at the wrong time at every turn. He could have easily been a 6 time champion had he just taken the punt on Red Bull in 2007, which nearly happened. What has happened since is consigned to the dustbin of history. Nobody other than him is responsible for his massive underachievement. He had practically the whole paddock at his feet, but his actions and choices left a lot to be desired.

Yes, Raikkonen won the world championship in 2007, but in 2008 and prior to being involved in the life threatening accident he had at Hungary in 2009, Massa out performed Raikkonen. By the end of the race in Germany (the race immediately before Hungary), Massa was 4th in the championship with 22 points and Raikkonen only had 13. His P2 in Hungary was only Raikkonen's 4th points finish in 2009, whereas Massa had 5. Of course, the 2009 Ferrari wasn't any easy car to drive, but Massa got more out of the car than Raikkonen. His 5 points finishes in a row that year came in Spain (where he could have been 4th but for faulty fuel readings), Monaco (finished 4th and got fastest lap, at a track he didn't enjoy), Turkey (6th place), Silverstone (recovered from 11th on the grid to finish 4th) and of course, Germany (third behind only the two Red Bulls of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel)

Best drivers (whether young or old) should only grace F1. Some drivers peak at 27-30, some maybe even later than that, but often aging drivers are sidelined in the name of rookies. If rookies have speed and age on their side then senior drivers have experience and racecraft on their's. So there is simply no such comparison between the two. It just comes down to who delivers under pressure.

This video and these facts prove a few things... ... The first one, how good was Hamilton as a rookie against such a good driver as Alonso in 2007. ... The second point, how Alonso was non-stop learning all his following years and getting better and better each year, especially with some non-top-3 machinery on the grid... ... And now... let me say... the third point may be that, Lewis, having been non-stop learning too after that year 2007 as well... : Who may say that in the year 2012, for example, both of them as teammates could have been really equal in most of the aspects... Plus... I think the one who learnt the most from the 2007 season was actually not the rookie Hamilton, who indeed learnt a lot that year... but Alonso... with some mental games where he was the victim of Hamilton [like the cheeky moves by the "rookie" at the beginning of the qualifying session of the 2007 Hungarian Grand Prix ... where Hamilton didn't respect the "taking turns/alternate" McLaren team's agreements,... and nothing happened to him... just a big grid penalty for Alonso for his "counter-cheeky" movement blocking Hamilton for 10+ extra seconds at the pit lane...] ... The rookie Hamilton was indeed super good in the 2007 season... and both ended with the same points... [after Alonso's previously mentioned and famous penalty in Hungary 2007 where he was the victim (and not the only offender)... and McLaren was shooting their own foot]... ... But... let's remember that Alonso didn't stop learning after that 2007 year neither... and his following teammates [as we can see] had to suffer that... i.e. Alonso's learnt skills after 2007... and his own inborn natural talent. ... ... @Aldas... 🏎️ Congrats for the video! 👏🏻

Will verstappen also be known as a carreer killer? Albon, gasly, perez, ricciardo? Kvyat????

This is more likely on Ricciardo 😄 his sudden leave had jammed enormous wrench in RB's gears, and dealt severe punch on Gasly and Albon careers. With Kvyat it is more... Tricky.

@@paveloleynikov4715 well ricciardo left because of verstappen, he wanted to be a N1 driver, after which he ruined his own carreer, Kvyats carreer was ruined because verstappen was doing wonders in the torro rosso, and then the smackdowns on gasly and albon, gasly being Lucky that he got a seccond chance and now that he is dominating over perez.

Kimi's an interesting one, because, in the first half of his career, he was generally considered the fastest driver after Schumacher. In 2007 he also seemed to prove it by beating both Hamilton and Alonso in an inferior Ferrari. Trulli was never consistent - even in his Jordan days he would qualify brilliantly but was somehow nowhere during the races. Vandoorne? Ocon? Piquet? Nowhere near world champion level. Villeneuve was way past his prime (and I would argue that he won his one and only championship by default in '97). Fisichella was very similar to Trulli - incredibly inconsistent for some reason; sometimes lightning-fast, and then nowhere. Alonso and Hamilton basically cancelled each other out in '07. Jenson Button seems to be in the best position to judge this kind of thing, as he beat both Hamilton and Alonso as a teammate, and lost to both as well. By the way, this is also why I never considered Alonso quite the best-of-all-time (nor Hamilton), as he lost or failed to beat a few teammates on a few occasions (Trulli, Hamilton, Button). Schumacher, for example, beat everyone, from the start of his career to his initial retirement (including the likes of Nelson Piquet, Felipe Massa).

Championship-caliber drivers are always going to make their teammate look inferior for the most part. Look at Hamilton-Bottas, Vettel-Webber, Verstappen-Gasly/Albon, Russell-Latifi, even LeClerc-Vettel, I believe some fans think of all those "number twos" as trash and can't drive fast. But they are all great drivers deep down and its up to them to raise their game, otherwise they won't become champions themselves. Only Nico Rosberg and Danny Ric were able to do that realtviely consistently against their Championship-caliber teammates.

Of course, the "#2" drivers have to drive in the shadow of their teammates, no matter how good they actually are. Rubens Barrichello was a great driver, but people remember Michael Schumacher, who was the hero of the tifosi. Same with Valterri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton. And with Felipe Massa/Giancarlo Fisichella and Fernando Alonso.
